I’m selling my close-to-new Kindernay 7 hub.

Its an internally geared hub made specifically for mtb and e-mtb, with 7 gears covering just over the range of an 11-46t cassette, and a really nice integrated hydraulic shifter. It’s also realtively light, very close to a Deore 1×12 set up (and significantly lighter than a Rohloff).

I have the endcaps for boost and 142mm x 12mm, and it comes with the shifter, actuator, torque arm, sprocket, essentially all the parts you need to install it. I also have enough oil for 3 or 4 oil changes I think, so 3-4 years of riding.

A couple of nice things worth mentioning are that it uses quite standard parts: 6-bolt disc rotors, shimano-splined sprokets, and the sprocket lockring uses a Hollowtech 2 BB tool.

I spent £1500 on the hub, rim and wheel build, extra endcaps, and spare oil, and I’m expecting to loose a lot of money… It would be nice to get half back, but I’m very open to offers.

I would also consider taking a set of 650b+ wheels in part exchange (as long as the rear is non-boost), ideally something like Hope Fortus 35. I may even swap for a steel disc-brake road bike.

I wrote a lot of details up on the singletrackworld forum, as well as my first impressions, and the Kindernay site and cyclingabout links are worth a read too:

The wheel is currently built onto a Dt Swiss HX491 rim (Ghyllside cycles, the UK Kindernay dealer, only had 36 hubs in stock, so my choices were limited). This is rock solid, not too heavy (550g), but a little narrow at 25mm. That said, I was running a 2.6″ tyre with no problems

So, the reason I’m selling it. I bought it in July, in preperation for my move to Switzerland in Autumn, as I figured my single speed wouldn’t cope with real mountains. However, the shifter is tricky to bleed, and the job my LBS did didn’t last more than a few rides before becoming very sloppy, both times they bled it. To add to that, I gave it it’s first oil change (at 400km of riding) just before leaving the UK, and first ride out in Switzerland it leaked a load of oil onto by rotor… So I removed it. That was two months ago, and since then I’ve been happily single speeding the local mountains, so realised I don’t need the Kindernay.

Before sale, I will send the shifter to Ghyllside to have it bled properly — I’ve explained the issues I had with it and they are 99% sure it’s just been bled badly. As for the oil contamination, they think I overfilled it; I can hopefully ask them to double check this too.

Note I’m still in Switzerland, so will only be able to sell/trade when I’m back for Xmas. I’ll be around Leeds and Preston if anyone wants to meet in person.
