Mental Mondays #4 Crossword & puzzles by Hannah

by 15

Hannah is the designer of this week’s fiendishly tricky crossword and those that know her will not be surprised to discover it’s rather cryptic.

The crossword is definitely one for those who spend perhaps too much time on the Forum. Or is it? Somewhere between cryptic and obscure, look at the questions through one eye and think off at an angle and you’ll probably get there. Read a few Fresh Goods Friday intros as a warm up if you need to.

Jigsaw #4 – Dolly Parton

If you get to ride flash bikes as part of your job, what bike do you build yourself on a framebuilding course? Chipps decided on a ‘performance pub bike’. Three hub gears (to the pub, back from the pub and back from the pub down the hill), hub brakes for simplicity and big tyres for taking the off road detour.

Did about a third of that one, got lured down the rabbit hole of going through pages of forum posts for inspiration, and just came to a dead mental end (plus wasted an hour of work time!) Grrr!

Nice one Hannah, I really enjoyed that. Loved the forum references. Strangely, the one that took me the longest was the three-letter word 🙂

Damn, that crossword was harder this week.

Was it too hard? Maybe anagrams are too much online, and better suited to when you’ve got pen and paper in hand?

I really struggled with some of the crossword, but got there in the end. A few had me kicking myself (5 down in particular). Long time since I actually finished a crossword!

One clue left and I’m doing my own damn head in…

    Which one @pyro ? I’ll give you a hint!

20 across @stwhannah – I’ve been scribbling letters on paper in random orders for an hour and nothing works! Gagh! 😀

Bug report: Prompted by @Pyro’s post, I wanted to go and see what 20 across was but I can’t go back and look at the crossword, because it is obscured by the dialog asking me to enter my details – which I did yesterday when I completed it the first time. I don’t want you to think I’m so desperate for the hat (although I would like it) that I’m entering every day!

And another one: I entered my details again and then clicked ‘Back to puzzle’ but that just executed a ‘back’ for the whole page, leaving me once more with the prompt to enter my details.

That was a print out and fill it out the old-skool way for me. Tough, but really enjoyable!

@Pyro you really will kick yourself… who makes maps?!

F’s sake. Took me 3 seconds after you said that, Hannah. Was getting sucked into other avenues to describe a map maker – and I’m an orienteer and map geek….

@pyro that one had me stumped until I realised that I’d picked the wrong words for the anagram. You only need 2 words to make 2 new words IIRC. Did take me longer than last week. Good to see different styles of clue too. Alot of them had me going ‘but that was so obvious’ after a fair while of trying completely the wrong thing.

Well, I’ve had another bash, and got them all apart from 2 and 3 down, which have me totally flummoxed!

    Got ’em!

    Nice work @stwhannah 👍
