The New Pivot Firebird Range Tops out at Over £15k

Pivot have released information about their all-new Pivot Firebird, completely redesigned for 2021. This 165mm rear and 170mm front suspension bike is Pivot’s longest travel 29r. It comes with size-specific geometry and dw-link suspension. Pivot have worked closely with their EWS riders to develop the new bike. With increased reach, more travel, a slacker head angle, size-specific chainstays and a number of other tweaks, Pivot say the bike is designed for speed.

A few notable changes are the DW-link suspension and vertical shock layout (which now allows for a water bottle). The new shock layout now allows the bike to have coil or air shocks.

Starting at £6800 up to an astounding £15,600. At almost £7000 to start, is this the most expensive entry-level bike on the market? The range is available in Orange or Glacial Green Metallic. Available in six different complete bike configurations with additional coil, Live Valve suspension and carbon wheel options. There are team, pro and race builds available. The bikes are available now.

Utilizing Pivot’s Hollow Core carbon construction, the Firebird chassis is optimized to deliver precise tracking at warp speeds, with 165mm of legendary dw-link suspension that devours everything in its path while still ensuring responsive manners and astonishing climbing prowess. Modern, progressive geometry and 29” wheels ensure battleship stability at speed, regardless of terrain, and state-of-the-art ride tuned carbon layups scaling stiffness and keeping weight to a minimum for each size. It looks sweet, but it’s really not.

Features:

  • Size-specific chainstays: The Firebird has unique chainstay lengths for each bike size, increasing from 43.1cm on the small to 44.5 cm on the XLarge in the low position.
  • Patented position-sensitive anti-squat: Gives improved traction and pedalling performance.
  • Vertical Shock Layout: Gives a more compact frame design and allows for Fox live integration.
  • Custom tuned Live Valve Option: Pro and Team builds are available with Fox Factory 38 FIT LIVE 170 mm fork Fox Factory LIVE shock providing 165mm rear travel.
  • Flip-Chip: High and low settings for geometry configiration. This changes the BB height from 355.8mm to 350.0mm and steepens the head and seat angles by .6 degrees.
  • Ride Tuning: Bikes available in S-XL and riders 5’2″ to 6’9″.
  • Build Options: Build options allow all riders to select exactly the spec to complement personal riding style.
  • Pivot Dock Tool system: on-the-bike tool system created in collaboration with Topeak.
  • Plus Rear Spacing: 12 x 157mm Super Boost Plus rear spacing.

    I’m not usually one to indulge in ‘‘ow much?!’ Type convos, the amounts don’t bother me, but why is the top model £15.6k here, and $13.1k in the US? I get the VAT/sales tax stuff, but still. Would almost be cheaper to import it yourself, paying all the taxes and duty etc

    Napkin calculations I get $13099 x.72 = £9451. Plus 20% VAT and 5% duty = £12500ish? (Assuming you could claim US sales tax back, but even if you couldn’t, you’d be quids in)

    Edit- further research suggest full bike duty is 14%, so £13900 total. Though I believe Pivot ship the bikes as a frame and build kit to get round this (or, they did)

    You’ve missed to real ‘issue’, look at the Euro vs Pound prices.

    The one at EUR11,999 and £12,600 – ought to convert to just over £10k… Serious UK premium.

    Looks like they’ve really pushed the Fox Live wiring and integration on the firebird, but yeah, pricing is a bit high, what’s the frame only pricing?

    When people used to say ‘you can buy a car for that’, it was a comparison of a super high end bike and sh1tty car. Nowadays, £15k buys you something amazing in the 2-3 year old car market. Having said that, there’s plenty of fun to be had on a cheap bike, whereas a cheap car is pretty miserable. Even then, a ‘cheap’ bike is still going to be £2k (if you can find one!).

    I went for a ride on the motorbike this morning and was pondering just how much engineering and support goes into 2 wheels and an engine vs a bicycle. Then came home to this article. Crazy!

    I am calling time on bike prices. Covid and Brexit and the laws of supply and demand seem to have sent things into the stratosphere.

    Big kudos to Hope for bringing manufacturing back to the UK and minimizing indirect costs. Shipping to and from the far east with the environmental and financial costs involved doesn’t seem to be adding much to the riding experience. Maybe we have reached a tipping point in global supply……

    The main thing here is the realisation that you’re not going to have any more fun on a £15k bike than a £5k bike.

    You could probably go lower than that price too! I earn decent money, but no way am I spending more than £5k on a bike (that threshold will go up with inflation obvs)

    In about half an hour, my neighbour is about to come home a (admittedly decade old) Triumph. The rear swing arm is basically box section with a hole in it for the axle. The finishing gear is either plastic, or bulky and cheap looking to eyes used to admiring high end mtbs.

    Conversely, have a mate with more money than sense with some sort of limited edition Daytona street legal track bike which I think was well north of £20k, and that is a beauty to look at.

    Well, either Pivot are happy to basically pull out of the UK via pricing, only selling very low volumes in comparison to their competitors.

    Or Pivot think that the mtb price points for more desirable brands has now crept up to the 7-15k range and they think enough people in the UK will pay (or finance) the new going rate. Not sure which.

    Cant see why I wouldn’t just buy one on holiday though. Premium brands love to go above and beyond on their warranty after all.

    They’d point you to the UK disti, upgrade, who seem to want to do everything in their power not to be helpful, IME.

    £6800 was their top of the line, XX1 12speed, carbon everything 23lb FS XC bike, in 2017 (so pre AXS and live valve).

    if their competitors are all sold out, the pricing is kinda irrelevent. I recon they’re pricing based on the fact that people want ‘a bike’ and will be willing to pay mid-range money to get a low-end bike. Some will, some won’t, but worse case they can whack them in a sale and they’ll look really good value (based on the discount size)

    This is mental.
    I thought I was mad buying and HB.160 when they were £5500, but the level of kit you got was better than most “boutique” brands at the time, and not far off some direct sales bikes.

    Now, you’d be lucky to get NX level Santa Cruz shite (probably… CBA to look).

    And Orange weren’t even on the short, short list. Neither the bike one, nor the skeletons wanking in a biscuit tin one.
