Cycle To Work Scheme Saved

by 0

The UK Government has just announced in its Autumn Statement that the Cycle To Work Scheme is to be kept, despite scrapping many other tax breaks, as the Government seeks to increase the revenue earned from Income Tax.

While we’re quite sure that not all bikes bought under the scheme are actually used to get to work, it’s a relief, not just in terms of carbon emissions tariffs, but also healthcare costs, that this scheme is being kept. Sub £1000 bikes bought under the bike to work scheme often act as a gateway into cycling, and that’s a new opportunity to get bums on saddles.

Also, with the £1000 threshold we’ve seen manufacturers pushing the specifications and quality of bikes at the magic £999.99 threshold. No doubt many local bike shops that benefit from new customers and service demands as a result of this scheme will be breathing a sigh of relief.

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.
