Eurobike 2016: KMC Producing Ebike Sprockets

by 0

You might not expect much new from a bicycle chain manufacturer, but KMC had one big surprise for us when we dropped by their Eurobike stand: sprockets! To be precise, ebike sprockets. Direct your peepers downward to find out more.

Following on from KMC’s ebike specific chains, these are ebike specific sprockets.

They were blue on the stand just to draw attention to the fact KMC are now making them. Production ones will be black, and made of chromoly.

They’re being made because specced up ebike chains were apparently resulting in higher wear on standard drivetrain components.

Above is the old X11.93, below the new one. As well as a black instead of grey finish on the inner plates, the new one is machined slightly differently…

… it’s difficult to see without a macro lens or your naked eye, but the newer version has extra chamfers and ramps on the edges to improve shifting.

This is KMCs new Blacktech chain. They describe it as a “diamond-like” coating, and say it massively reduces abrasive wear.

Bike jewellery!

David started mountain biking in the 90’s, by which he means “Ineptly jumping a Saracen Kili Racer off anything available in a nearby industrial estate”. After growing up and living in some extremely flat places, David moved to Yorkshire specifically for the mountain biking. This felt like a horrible mistake at first, because the hills are so steep, but you get used to them pretty quickly. Previously, David trifled with road and BMX, but mountain bikes always won. He’s most at peace battering down a rough trail, quietly fixing everything that does to a bike, or trying to figure out if that one click of compression damping has made things marginally better or worse. The inept jumping continues to this day.
