Cycle Show 2015 – Whyte

by 2

At the Cycle Show at the NEC this weekend, you can get the first chance to see some of the new stuff from Whyte. All the bikes are longer and slacker, and they look very tidy indeed.

First up is the new Carbon T130C RS – and a very nice looking machine it is too:

DSC_0051Mmmmmmmmm. Quite pretty, is that. It’s got a carbon front end, and an aluminium rear end. All the Whytes are at least 20mm longer this year – apart from the G160. And we’ll come to that in a bit.DSC_0052Quite a sweet-looking frame – and some very nice touches.

DSC_0053Aluminium back end, and Whyte’s Quad 4 suspension.DSC_0089Many folks will be happy to see a regular threaded BB to go with that single chainring.DSC_0087…a 67 degree head angle…DSC_0088The bike is designed for a single chain ring – no front mech placements here – which mean a wider main pivot for less flex, better cornering and less maintenance (it says here). Looks tidy.

DSC_0085The T130 comes with the new boosted Pike. Lots of clearance. people; lots of clearance. The RS specced machine here will set you back £3,599. There’s also a works one at £4,500ish.

The G160 is also looking very long and low:

DSC_0098In fact, it’s been lengthened by a whopping 50mm this year, so it can run a supershort 35mm stem. 160mm of travel (well, duh).

DSC_0104Hope headset, 66 degree head angle, 160mm Pikes, Boost (so the chain path is more outboard – less interference from the tyre in lower gears).DSC_0100A SRAM RAIL40  wheelset (instead of the SRAM RAIL50 last year) is actually lighter, with the same rim but a different hub. The savings have gone on that Hope headset and BB for reliability, and XX1 rear mech for bling.
DSC_0092Be honest, you want one.DSC_0097Here is the RS version in slightly less bold colourscheme. The RS is £2799, and the works one is £3,999.

Barney Marsh takes the word ‘career’ literally, veering wildly across the road of his life, as thoroughly in control as a goldfish on the dashboard of a motorhome. He’s been, with varying degrees of success, a scientist, teacher, shop assistant, binman and, for one memorable day, a hospital laundry worker. These days, he’s a dad, husband, guitarist, and writer, also with varying degrees of success. He sometimes takes photographs. Some of them are acceptable. Occasionally he rides bikes to cast the rest of his life into sharp relief. Or just to ride through puddles. Sometimes he writes about them. Bikes, not puddles. He is a writer of rongs, a stealer of souls and a polisher of turds. He isn’t nearly as clever or as funny as he thinks he is.
