Apart from the obvious… we’re all a year wiser, what’s changed in the last year?
We’re certainly busier and selling a fair few higher end bikes, including Orange Bikes custom builds (partly due to the take up of 0% finance we offer), as well as us now offering Lapierre, Production Privee and KS. We are looking to expand our team shortly too, so stay in touch if you’re interested in becoming a hands-on part of the bike trade.
How do you compete against the big onliners?
As part of our more personal approach we are able to offer customisations to off the peg bikes, not just manufacturer options where there are any. For example, the new Nukeproof Mega is only available in set colours (depending on model), but we ordered in a yellow frame to make the switch for a customer just recently. Otherwise yellow is a frame only option. Here’s the evidence…
What about this new wheel size?
This can be a can of worms and we wouldn’t say it’s affected sales either way. For myself (at 6ft 3”), I fell in love with the 29er for XC riding and then found the 26 wheel too small really, like I had to work it too hard. The 27.5″ feels just right on my Orange Five for taking to the Red and Black runs.
Retracing some steps, what on earth possessed you to open a bike shop anyway?
Coming from an online, retail background and involvement in other businesses I realised the importance of working with products that I had a passion for. Just Mountain Bikes has stemmed from that alongside a few other online-marketed ventures. The passion in our service and builds is easy to see…
Where do you love to ride?
We go for the odd local spin cross-country and around our woods with a group of pals, but we often make the trip to Cannock Chase or South Wales. I recently donned a full face helmet for the first time at Antur Stiniog and am now hooked on the downhills with uplift service. It’s certainly a place I’ll be heading for again soon!
