Interbike 2013: Uvex adds Enduro helmet

Foam and mounts and peaks and spoilers oh my!

Nice low-profile Lupine mount.

For 2014, German eye- and head-protection specialist Uvex has a new trail/Enduro helmet duo to join their lightweight – but aging – XP 100.  Made in Germany, the Quatro and Quatro Pro provide a bit more coverage than more XC-oriented helmets and a more aggressive look to boot.

Non-pro model is a bit cleaner.
Non-pro model is much cleaner.

Coming in at $160 (UK pricing TBC), the non-Pro Quatro is a handsome helmet that comes in seven colours (two of which are aimed at ladies).  The shell comes in two sizes (53-57cm and 56-60cm) and the two-piece shell covers the bottom of the helmet to minimise handling damage.  Uvex’s simple but effective IAS dial retention system is present as is their trademark Monomatic multi-position chin closure.

Just imagine being passed by someone in a pink & blue helmet.

The deluxe option comes in the form of the Quatro Pro.  Available in four colour combinations (including all black) for $190, the Pro adds removable Lupine and GoPro mounts and a removable spoiler to provide the downforce needed to balance a camera or light (maybe- or maybe it’s just for looks).  The Pro is otherwise identical to the Quatro, and the shared bug netting can be seen behind the massive front vents.

Uvex is distributed in the UK by Raleigh and in the US by Magura Direct.

They are quite nice. Pricey though.

I remember reading some helmet safety article which said (more technically than I) that sticky out stuff at the back of a helmet was bad. Particularly when falling backwards e.g. impacted from behind as the spoiler can catch e.g. on a car and cause the helmet to be forced up exposing the back of the head ready for impact.

Hmm, nice, but why oh why do we need rear spoilers? Sort of thing a 6 year old might crave. Hat with wings! Cool!
