This week, we re-visit Cycle Gear:

Matt picks up where we left off in February. Cycle Gear were in the throws of their shop relocation to this quite stunning new showroom and workshop space in central Halifax.

Steel meets brick meets wood, space, plenty of light... and wall to wall bike gear

‘After five years of negotiating, designing, building, painting and a shed load of late nights, it’s finally come off. On Friday 22nd March, Cycle Gear finally opened its doors at the our lovely new shop on Horton Street in Halifax, West Yorks’.

Unfortunately for us, the weather wasn’t too kind to us over that weekend, being bad enough that some staff couldn’t even get into work, never mind our customers! Anyway, we managed to extend our ‘opening weekend’ making it an ‘opening weekend… plus a week’.

Madison's clothing range

Our new showroom has undergone a few changes now we’ve got room to do things. I wont divulge too much as you’ll have to come in and see for yourselves. We’ve got a new till system, that let’s us know what we’ve got in stock right there and then! (Pretty essential for a company that sends out 50+ bikes a week we think). We’ve got some really slick, in-store displays from GoPro and Continental. Most of Madison’s clothing range is out now on display too. The best thing about the new place (from a staff point of view anyway), is that we now have heating and hot running water!

Scott Sports have been brilliant to us, providing a massive range of Scott Scale 29ers, Scale 26ers, Genius 29ers, Genius 650b, Spark 29ers, and Spark 26ers. There’ll also be some road bikes coming from them in the near future.

What’s your current best-selling/hottest product?

Our best seller from Scott at the moment is probably the Scale 29ers, we’ve done a few of them over the last few week thanks to Scott’s demo fleet.

Now you’ve got all this space, what’s the score with demo bikes?

We source our demo fleet direct the national demo fleet so take your pick. It’s a £200 returnable deposit and £40 as a hire charge. Then, if you buy one that £40 will be knocked straight off the cost price of the bike!

Genesis and Saracen also have a keen dominance in the new store. We’ve got the full Genesis range out and most of the Saracen range. Hot sellers from these two of late have been the Genesis Grapil, and the new Kili Flyer 650b from Saracen. Both are brilliant pieces of full sus goodness (and both recently tested by Singletrack – Ed.)

Full Saracen and Scott mtb ranges. Take your pick

As there’s no national demo fleet from Saracen and Genesis, 2013 models purchased at full price are eligible for our 7-day return policy. We’re giving you the chance to take a bike, ride it for a weekend, if you don’t like it, bring it back and we’ll swap it for something else. Terms and Conditions do apply, so best to ask in-store for details.

Anything else you want to mention?

Our spanking new Tech Centre. It’s the new workshop at Cycle Gear. Four mechanics, all Cytech trained. In short, we can do everything from fork services to wheel builds.

There are road bikes on offer too if you’re starting out down that route. Coming in from about £500, going right up to the titanium stuff from Genesis.

We’d like as many people as possible to start riding in to see us on bikes, so there’s plenty of bike parking downstairs. Anyone that comes in on a bike can have a free brew (tea, coffee or water all available). You may even be offered a Digestive if you’re very lucky if I haven’t already eaten them.
