Alpkit Big Shakeout this weekend!

News from the Alpkit crew about this weekend’s mini festival of outdoorsy fun in the Peak District – and it looks like the weather won’t be bad either…

Just one week to go until Big Shakeout 2012 and final preparations are well underway, so if you’ve been thinking about planning a weekend to explore the Peak District then why not base yourselves at the Big Shakeout site, within easy access to the Peak and even closer access to the free Saturday meal and 2 nights camping and entertainment! Or perhaps join up with friends and make it a base for a weekend get together.

Still places to ride with Ed 'Bearded Lovely' Oxley of Great Rock...

For starters we’ll be welcoming you on Friday from 4 pm, where we’ll be doing our best to get your weekend off to a great start. There will be a Welsh buffalo burger and pint available for £5 on the Friday evening to help wind down after your journey, plus some live music to get your weekend going and shake off any thoughts and stress of work!
We have been making some final plans for the free on and off site activities and entertainment over the weekend. On the Saturday there will be lots of free workshops for kids and adults on site, but of course you do have all that great climbing, biking and walking near bye. We’ve updated our What’s To Do and Food and Entertainment pages which should hopefully give you a clearer idea of what’s on offer, but in summary…

Highlights include Vin Cox and his Foraging Bike Ride, where you can tag along with Vin in the afternoon as he guides you around the lanes foraging for food, before heading back to camp to cook up the findings. You don’t even have to join him on the ride, but simply come and watch as he runs through how he utilises natures bounty. Later in the evening Vin will be back again for an informal chatty talk in the café with a few guests.

Meanwhile.. in the Yurt, The Adventurists have confirmed that they will be there from early afternoon with maps films and general adventurous tales including a screening of the official Mongol rally film and a talk on When Adventure Goes Wrong!

Let’s not forget the Saturday evening Pie minister meal and Real Ale bar, a perfect time to catch up after a day of action.

There will be a few limited places left on the School of Adventure courses to sign up to at the weekend, but if you want to secure a place then we recommend booking before hand. Still places on Ed Oxley’s guided skills rides, or if you’re interested in getting into outdoor media, then there are still places available on the School of Adventure Photography course, which includes your Big Shakeout weekend ticket and a goody bag with Rab hat, Clif bars, Memory card holders from F-stop and discount vouchers from Aquapac, f-stop, Nite watches and Totally Rad software.
