Tuesday Treats 9: Cycleworks

by singletrackjay 3

In Tuesday Treats this week we’ve moved to the other end of the country to take a look at Cycleworks, with a string of shops based amongst the rolling hillsides of Surrey and Hampshire. As well as being one of the country’s premier Specialized dealers, they’ve got a star studded – and possibly the fastest – staff so far, though we are willing to open a sweepstake on that one.

As with all our Premier Dealers, they’re lovely and generous too – this week they’ve offered a duo of prizes, firstly a rather natty Evoc CC10 rucksack with bladder worth £80, plus a £50 voucher to the lucky winner. The runner-up will get a quality Cycleworks jersey, made by Endura.

This, plus £50 to fill it with nice things...

So, read on and find out what makes them tick…

“Spread across Surrey and Hampshire, Cycleworks was established in 1998 and has grown to be one the country’s premier Specialized dealers picking up Orange, Whyte, Yeti and Cervélo along the way. We cater for all cyclists and offer a wide range of mountain, road and commuter bikes and pride ourselves in having superbly equipped workshops and mechanics ready to take on any job thinkable to keep your bike running smoothly.

Just one of the Cycleworks - this time in Leatherhead

With staff ranging from ex-professional dirt jumpers, a development rider for a major bike manufacturer and an ex-national roadie along with a wealth of us that race locally, it’d be hard to find a group of people with more passion for riding than we do!

This feature is on the Leatherhead shop, managed by Dave Farmer- a familiar and well respected face in the Surrey Hills. You can check out the rest of our shops on http://www.cycleworks.co.uk or follow us @cycleworks for regular updates on what’s going on.

What’s your current best selling/hottest product?

Hot products are always tricky subject as we have such a range of kit going out the door, but like many other shops have noted, 2012 really is the year of the dropper post and a lot of customers have opted for the reliable (and very reasonably priced) Specialized Command Post. We also struggle to keep enough Torq bars and gels in stock and the new season Whyte 29ers have seen a lot of interest so far.

Which product/brand does every staff member have on their bike?

Again, it’s the much documented dropper post standing out here. We’re also massive advocates for Shimano drivetrains, with a number of us tarts spec’ing XTR on our bikes [it’d be rude not to surely?]. We’ve got a lot of staff making the switch to big wheels as well. Whatever your viewpoint on 29ers, it’s hard to ignore that they are quicker A-B on most trails!

What was the last custom build you did?

Ride, pimped.

That’d be Dave’s very spangly Stumpjumper Comp Carbon 29er. Okay so it’s not quite a ground up custom build, but as he’s swapped the brakes for M786 XTs, the drivetrain to his existing XTR, popped a 50mm Thomson stem on there, some Hope ProII and NoTubes Flow wheels, an offset bushing to slacken the head angle a tad and extended the forks to 140mm- it’s not quite as it left the box now. This bike is an absolute rocket ship.

Tell us something about your shop/staff that no-one knows…

Two of our Team Cycleworks riders (Sam and Tobias Pantling) are currently racing the Trans Provence on their rather tweaked Stumpjumper EVOs. Check out Toby’s bike check on Vimeo here and keep up with them (and the rest of our team) @teamcycleworks.

Is there a regular shop ride or forthcoming event you think our readership should know about?

We don’t run a shop ride as such but as we’re regularly out on the amazing trails around each of our shops, become a familiar face and come and join us!

What do Singletrack Premier subscribers get from you?

Why is their shop nicer than our houses?

With some lovely big LCDs, sofas and Nespresso machines at both our Leatherhead and Petersfield shops – pop in for a free coffee or Red Bull, flick through a copy of Singletrack mag and then enjoy 10% off all parts, accessories and clothing at the till. Due to limited space, we can’t offer the former at Guildford and Haslemere, but the same great discounts apply.

  1. Was in there on Friday and spoke to Jack. Proper nice lad and came out with a Camber Carbon….good work!

  2. Bought my bike from the Haslemere branch, all top guys and very helpful. Bloody fast by all accounts as well…

  3. The Burpham/Guildford branch are also really good – everything you could want in an LBS.
