Just a quick update as I slowly gather parts for the build.
The Kona Kilauea is coming together!
So far I’ve built up the rolling chassis while I wait to hear what groupsets are available to sort out gearing and braking.
The steering department is coming together thanks to a lovely Hope semi integrated headset, 3t carbon stem and Ritchey WCS carbon bars and headset spacers. The bars are narrower than I normally run but in keeping with the Kilauea’s XC racer origins.
I’ll see how I get on…
For now there’s a pair of Rockshox Sid World Cups up front, XTR wheels and Schwalbe Nobby Nic tyres.
To be continued……

Looking good – you might want some more carbon with that though!
I’m quite looking forward to seeing this finished.
Make sure you make a really marmite choice somewhere in the build purely for bridleway ass sniff points.
what width bars are those Dave?
I had a steel Kilauea back in the day and remember getting very excited about switching the Project2’s for some of the first Rockshox Judy XC’s so I could enjoy 80mm of luxury travel, happy days.
I think you should put V-brakes on it………….and bar ends. 🙂
When is the Steel Explosif coming back??
Wow, that’s gonna be a super bling build if the components attached so far are anything to go!
I’ve just been riding the Cannondale Flash . Had to put bar ends on .
Had to .
It’s the law .
And those bars are too wide .
C’mon davey get rid of the horrid tyres
…..and put on some ESI racer edge grips.
Bars are 660mm, that’s XC right? ;o)
ESI racer edge grips are the wrong red unfortunately.
Marmite configurations are planned :o)
Dave, I have some white ESI grips at my house…
those bars don’t look narrower than a blue whale 😆
Reackon you should fit the Dyna-sys XT group on there only with a double ring setup to remain pure… (It’s a damn site cheaper than Srams XX groupset).
