After some ideas for a token savoury pancake or two before I get going on the classic lemon and sugar/cherry pie filling and choc ice cream ones.

Oh, and banana and choc sauce. And maple syrup.

used to fill them with chilli, then cover them with a bit more chilli and a load of cheese, then bake. just like a burrito. quite nice too.

    Nothing wrong with savoury fillings.

Similarly, you can put sweet fillings in a tortilla.

Seconded for Bolognese, delicious as a savoury pancake.

My Dad used to have Mince ones – as in mince and dumplings – with gravy on.

    Weird I know.

Don simon – I’d already seen that… and the Mumsnet thread! Better suggestions on here. Something meaty and spicy sounds good, maybe a fajita style pancake, with extra cheese.

For savoury, should do what they do in France and make the pancakes out of buckwheat flour then cheese and ham, sausages, smoked salmon, all work. Can even crack an egg in there too.

Actually a couple of recipes for savoury pancakes in my my original (dating from the ’70s) Delia cook book. Spinach and cheese, and what I’ve done which is bolognese. Both involve then baking rolled up pancakes with a cheese topping. I’ll take Delia’s judgement on what’s right with cooking over elf’s any day. As mentioned, it’s also a pretty standard thing in Brittany (though they call them galettes).

Elf, ever eaten outside of Brick Lane? 😉
They’re great, Russians stuff them with meat minced with onions and garlic, than they fold them and fry (butter not oil).
    Polish example here.

Right, some good farmers’ market smoked bacon and strong cheese, and smoked salmon and some kind of soft cheese it is.

    I like smoke.

    Ta for all the ideas.

Wrong? What a bizarre idea. Pancakes are crepes which are French and the French would consider only eating sweet ones very strange.

    Good ham and cheese ftw.

Galettes? I normally just go for a nice tomato-tangy meat bolognaise filling. But the soft cheese and spinach filling sounds wicked!

Yeah but crispy duck ‘pancakes’ are different, they’re not like Shrove Tuesday pancakes, are they? There’s no egg, no milk, just flour and water. More like very thin chapatis.

That would be a brilliant argument if it wasn’t for the French eating cheese, ham, egg etc pancakes, and there being lots of creperies in France selling both sweet and savoury pancakes.
