My only other option is full winter gauntlets, which I’m not a fan of on anything other than the singlespeed. Being as they’re also about 15 years old their thermal properties are arguably limited.

So on that note, what should I be looking at? Looking for something insulated but not too bulky; windproof over full-on artic explorer.

Any recommendations?

100% Brisker – fantastic gloves

Skytech Argon work gloves. A bit sweaty but well warm, grippy and about a fiver a pair.

just bought a pair of the 100% brokers which are great,merino wool liner gloves nd a normal pair of gloves have also been pretty cosy

I got some 100% brisker after the last thread. they have a normal thin palm and a slightly thicker back. Ideal for MTB when you need to still feel the bars. Ideal for 2° to 10° IMO.

Can I piggie-back on this thread please? I’ve got a pair of Sealskin Lobsters which are nice and toasty and I’ve used them on the road bike a few times last winter. However they have no padding in the palms which isn’t great, and for dexterity they are severely lacking – I didn’t enjoy yesterdays ride with them and I’d never use them on the MTB.

So for MTB and probably the road too, I’ve narrowed it down to Glacier Perfect Curve, Galibier Barrier III, or the Phew Winter Mit over glove thing. Thoughts?

For reference – I have Gore Power Windstopper softshell gloves which are useless when it gets cold, even with Merino liners my fingers are frozen and sore at anything approaching zero and awful below. The Sealskins, as I say, are toasty but just too cumbersome to feel safe.

Just ordered some Briskers too, so happy to report back. Guessed on a medium, as that’s what i am in Giro, Fox and Dakine.

I don’t wear my gauntlet gloves unless it’s bitterly cold as they’re very cumbersome. When I was nightriding and commuting regularly it was on a SS, so not a huge issue. I’m very much after something that’s happy to down to around zero, but thin enough to maintain dexterity to shift and use dropper remote: these Briskers seem to fit the bill.

Regarding the Glaciers, I’m not a fan of neoprene for MTBing. It can be very warm, but doesn’t breath which results in wet hands. I also found with thinner neoprene gloves that it’s very hard to heat hands up if the gloves are too thin to work well – the water insulation doesn’t deal with being cold well. Modern wetsuits are designed to help keep water out, and have hydrophobic linings, so on that note the fleece lining should help, but for riding, I’d still personally avoid. Of the three I’d probably go for the Galibier.

Have been using the Pearl Izumi Pro Barrier but anything below 4/5 degC and my fingers turn numb, been thinking of 100% Briskers as well, though few reviews say the stitching is not that great and not that great for below 3degC.

Is there such a glove out there where you get great bar feel but keep your fingers warm?

As I’m up in Scotland, it gets below zero this time of the year. Last weekend it was -4 and my fingers felt every bit of it. I’m worried the Briskers won’t go that low? Galibier claim their’s are good to -3 which is probably fine?

Just got some strike2 gloves thismorning, to replace the older strikes that I lost, they seem good, lighter weight, more dextrous and feel warmer..

I wear a pair of Nalini Manotex unless it’s below 0, then I switch to my PX crab hands- they’re too warm for anything above 0 on my hands.

Picked up some Endura Strike II’s last week too, really good glove. Bought them at BPW so they had a baptism of a day’s uplifting and they were lovely and comfy all day. Was out at Brechfa early this morning and they got my hands from freezing to warm and comfy in -8 by the second climb 😀

Weird, I really think those gloves are great, i’m a huge fan (enough so that I bought a second pair) – not strictly a MTB glove, but I haven’t let it stop me using them for that. Given the OP asked for something windproof rather than total arctic protection, rating them on subzero performance is not necessary.

I find Briskers rubbish below 3deg, but i love them from March to the end of Oct

What rivi said. Love my briskers but they arent warm in proper frigid cold weather. I got some altura night vision high viz for the road bike and wore them on the tops mountain biking today and they were warm enough. Theyre on sale in black from wiggle at the moment.

The £5 ones from Aldi. I’ve had Endura Strike and Specialised Elements, neither are as good. Your hands do get quite toasty so they’re not for days above say 5-6c.

For the money you can’t go wrong. They even last for ages too. Mine are on their 3rd winter and going strong.

@fifeandy on the gore power gloves. My mate had a pair of the exact same gloves and isn’t one for cold hands unlike me, but we are in agreement that they are useless in the cold.

They were toasty warm.

Night ride tonight to try out my 100% Briskers. Hands cold when I put the gloves on and set off due to usual kit sorting and faffing at around 0C. Soon warmed up and didn’t have colds hands after the first mile or so. -3C and very frosty when we finished the ride. I’m pleased with them. Much colder or wet and exposed and you would want something a bit more.

The Skytec Argon Thermal gloves they sell are warm and are pretty waterproof (possibly not so on the back of your hand but this hasn’t been an issue yet). Currently £5.99 and super impressed.

I bought 100% Brisker and Fox sidewinder Derek polar after the last thread. Tested back to back in 2-5 degrees, some windchill too. I found the Fox to be significantly warmer, grip and feel being great on both pairs.

For all the use they’ll get in an average IOW winter, I’d settle for a pair of £5 winter gloves from Aldi.

Bought these for road use but they have been surprisingly awesome for MTBing. Fully waterproof and reasonably breathable.

They’ve been fine down to about 1 degree, though I would expect to feel the cold if I were to head up Helvellyn at this time of year.

Screwfix Sytec Argon gloves..£5. Wore them last night and hands were amazingly toasty and whilst they’re thick gloves I had just enough dexterity for the downhills. Also the whole of the palm has a grippy texture. Not sure if I’d be wearing them in the rain but for a fiver..billy bargain!!

Agree about the 100% Brisker gloves. Very nice and comfy.
But in 0-1c in the shade, with a breeze – too chilly!
