Its a Kona Jake and came with 31.8 x 420 bars on it.. I'd like something a bit wider, can I just put on normal road bars, or is there a good cx specific bar I should look at.. I'm struggling to find 31.8 CX bars and don't really want to have to shell out on a new stem as well!

My cx bike has standard 440m/m road bars on it, and I've never had a problem. I'm not the smallest bloke on the planet either.

I'd reccomend Salsa Bell Laps..

Ace feel, etc, etc.. nice and wide..

I Really wanted the bell laps... but unless I've compleatly missed something I can only find them in 26mm clamp size....

I got mine from Charlie the Bike monger IIRC...
Mine are O/S...

I have some 46cm Salsa Motos and a 26->31.8mm shim. Too wide for me so you could give them a go.
I'm now using Easton 44cms which flare to about 48cm on the drops, ideal for cross.

just use usual wide road bars, FSA Wing-Pros are my faves, i can't unrecommend Bell-Laps enough

I'm about to take some 31.8mm 46cm Salsa Short and Shallow drops off my CX bike (too wide for me). Was going to ask £18 posted if you're interested.

Just as an aside, apparently these are too wide for use on the three peaks( Salsa bell lap 46cm) if anyone was thinking of using them (as I was going to!)They may be 46 cm but the flare makes them wider than the allowed 50 cm. Which to the way I read the rules should only apply to straight bars anyway.

Why Jo? I was thinking of getting a set, why don't you rate them?

Finbar, any chance of a piccie of the bars to rdscoleman-taylor@hotmail.com, please?
As for wide bars, I recall WTB doing a 60cm drop bar. Don't know if it's still around though.

"Why Jo? I was thinking of getting a set, why don't you rate them? "
for my hands at least the unnecessary curves and wiggles are all in the wrong place, the 'ergo' bend puts your hands further away from the brake levers and the flare puts the STIs at a funny angle which makes them uncomfortable and awkward to shift
as with all bars YMMV

Bell Laps have a very pronounced anatomic curve to them. As a result, they are a very love/hate shape of bar. I like the slight flare and the width on mine, but I'm still not at all convinced by the shape of the drop.

cheers Jo/AdamM, think I may give them a miss then.

Standard Cinelli Vai on my cx bike - they cope with all 16 stone of me fine, are cheap and not particularly heavy.
