I'm tempted actually. I really like (other people's) iPhones and was thinking of getting an netbook. And they're not silly expensive.

    What am I missing?

EDIT: ps, you can STW on it, right? RIGHT???

There isn't an STW App yet – so no, you cannot access this forum. Only Apple Approved (R) web sites can be browsed through Apple Approved (R) Apps.

I would be seriously tempted to but the fact its more of an iphone operating system meaning you have to go through the app store rather than just installing freeware from the web does kinda put me off.

of course you can see STW on it – and the forum! as you can on an iPhone. you can go on any website except those that are totally flash.

footflap – what are you going on about with your "Apple Approved (R) web sites can be browsed" – total bollox!

pretty annoying that they won't put flash support on it tho. they're trying to kill flash – can't see it working.
If sites like bbc start using quicktime or something instead of flash video, maybe they'll succeed

and will-of-f… there's load of free apps on the app store so what's the problem?

Um, no iBook ™ reader either, at least for the UK. Personally, I don't really see the point unless you want to look like Dom Jolly with a giant phone.

I want a proper play with one first, but if that impresses the cheapest model looks great as a lounge-dwelling computer. Sits there as a digital photo frame most of the time, pick it up and browse on it as I tend to with my iphone at the moment, rather than sitting in front of a big monitor.

Don't do it. It's worse than a laptop for using in the house (underpowered, limited iPhone-ish OS), and it's worse than an iPhone for walking around with (waaay too big). It makes no sense.

A while ago I bought a netbook — thought it would be better for portability in the house, perhaps would keep it in the car with a dongle, under the bed, etc. Turned out to be a waste of money, it's sitting collecting dust. In the house the desktop and laptops are always close by, and the iPhone is in the pocket — much more convenient to use one of these then boot up the sh1tty netbook. And for the outside, the iPhone — small, comfortable, convenient, always there. It's a killer piece of kit.

Buy an iPhone. Costs a bit more (probably), but at least it has a definite useful purpose.

Youtube have a HTML5 beta site that doesn't use Flash; it's much quicker than the Flash version. I'm sure others will start replacing Flash with HTML5 too – Flash is slow and buggy, to be honest, just look at how much the ads slow down this site – in which case Apple need not care about Flash in the long run…

Yes – I want something that is a pain to browse on (no mouse), a pain to type on (no keyboard), can only connect to what apple want me to connect to and can only run what apple want me to run and is bigger than an iphone but with the functionality of an itouch and is a wee bit delicate.

I want one – it's my Touch on steroids, just what I've been waiting for. And if US pricing is anything to go by not the usual very high Apple pricing. I prefer my Touch to my Laptop other than the screen size. Thinks it works miles better and is more reliable.

Those free apps only get to be in the app store if Apple approve of them. They can turn around any time they like and throw them off, and probably remove them remotely from your machine.

i think the dollar-pound conversion will be pretty upsetting.

i also think when the developers get hold of it, it'll get really interesting.
shame about the front facing camera – 30 pin plug in camera that can point both ways maybe?

Could they throw them off without turning around…or is the turning around integral?

luked2 – but they basically approve everything except extreme religious stuff or porn – they even approve VOIP stuff now! – I for one am happy the apps are tested. and they approve stuff in a couple of weeks max – and the developers are happy with the 70:30% split

    – no, they can't remote wipe something.

Amazon can remotely delete books from the Kindle via the 3G link. At least with an iPhone you can choose not to upgrade and get officially cleansed. Have to see if the iPad can be jail broken – only way of unleashing the iPhones real potential (back ground Apps etc).

For not wanting something so limited in capability, flexibility, connectivity, interface and overall use? If that is troglodyte tendencies then I'll be in the corner trying to make fire.

Too big for one-finger-typing, too wee for a proper keyboard.

I'd be surprised if I was right and it didn't sell though, they're not known for their recent business failures…

IMO biggest problem with iPhone is battery life…so how is a super-sized tablet going to perform ? Have I missed something like some new battery technology ?

Don't listen to the iHaterz ™

Buy one if you want one!

Personally, it doesn't do it for me at all… Performance looks too compromised for its size. Doesn't look like it moves the game on much from the iPhone or iPod touch in my view, except for in size. And then there's the fact the screen resolution, though ok for its size again, is only 1024×768… Who uses a computer at that res these days?

If you think it will work for you, why not get one… I just know it wouldn't suit me. Already have an iPhone, and a MacBookPro, and also a pretty decent spec windoze desktop too so just don't see the point personally.

Oh, and I'm not overly fond of it design wise either. I think they could have made it look a bit more "organic" (for lack of a better word), with more rounded edges and softer tones perhaps…

    Bigger battery one wonders?

Plenty of space in there compared to an iPhone one suspects!

I want something that is a pain to browse on (no mouse)

a mouse is not the ultimate solution for browsing – i think the demo shows its a very useful browsing environment

a pain to type on (no keyboard)

well, the iphone keyboard with auto correction is really pretty good – Jobs said about the physical keyboard – if you have to write 'war and piece'…

can only connect to what apple want me to connect to

    um, what?

and can only run what apple want me to run

apart from the 120,000 apps, what is it you need?

and is bigger than an iphone but with the functionality of an itouch.

bigger is good, screen wise, yes?

and is a wee bit delicate

the unibody construction would suggest it will be pretty strong – when you used it, what felt delicate about it – I'm intrigued?

I'm going to order one when they become available. I have a £2k MBP and a £500 iphone. I'm sick of working on the MBP, then stopping work and playing on the MBP. The iPhone is just too small to do lots of web stuff on in front of the TV. £600 (estimate for 64GB/Wifi only) is cheap when I think that the only other second computer I would consider would be a MacBook or another MBP, and it would only get used for web browsing 99% of the time.

If I owned cheap £400 notebooks like the majority of people, I might think the iPad was expensive. But as it is, it's a bargain.

As for not being able to install stuff that's not in the Appstore; I manage fine on my phone with this, never wanted anything that isn't there already. The iPad is an appliance, not a computer, all the fiddly bits are hidden from the user. If I wanted to muck about installing stuff after an entire day of writing software, I would have bought another machine years ago.

Well, since it's must bigger it has a much bigger battery. About 15 times as big in fact.
10 hours of use sounds pretty good to me.

Not that I'm likely to buy one. I need a proper computer and my phone does everything the iPad does (apart from having a big screen of course).

p.s. what's wrong with iphone battery life? It lasts ages.
