    (Where the accent helps/adds character)?

    I’m going to say Scotland.

    What a daft question.

Although, since you ask, I’d say Southern Africa.

USA. Must do, as most singers do an American accent when singing.

Depends what’s being sung really, but my money would be on Wales. You just can’t beat the stirring sound of a Welsh Male Voice Choir.

If TV is to be believed, you get random groups of people – workers, or protesters etc – spontaneously nailing multi part harmonies in South Africa. I find that pretty impressive. And in church they put our tunelessly mumbling congregations to proper shame.

I recorded this off Radio Gaborone in 1983 and haven’t stopped playing it since.

I was in Austria last summer and there was a bunch of South African school kids waiting for their coach in a cable car station car park and they started what seemed to be impromptu song. I’ve no idea what it was but it was truly wonderful.
When what appeared to be a teacher appeared, they then started singing in a more disciplined way (maybe they were a choir) but it wasn’t as stirring. They were amazing, so talented and the harmonies were stunning

I’d have to say Scotland, there’s a bunch of my favourite artists are Scottish: Eddie Reader, Karine Polwart, KT Tunstall, Mogwai, Capercaillie, Garbage (Shirley Manson), Thrum (Monica Queen), The Delgados/Emma Pollock/The Burns Unit
But of course there’s Ireland as well: Heidi Talbot, Cara Dillon, Little Green Cars…
England; The Staves, The Unthanks, Billy Bragg, Half Man Half Biscuit…
I could add more to those, but that’s enough to be going on with.
