[Closed] Two epic riding days that snapped my Flux and blew my knob off.

[#4170938]

Leffeboy was over from Belgium, so Cynic-Al and I hatched an old school epic couple of days riding in Perthshire.

All was going well, top weather, dry trails, nae midgies when with 5 miles to go in a thirty five mile loop, just riding along, my Flux snapped just above the front mech. With no possibility of a trailside fix I was staring a five mile walk out ....in carbon soled shoes. Leffeboy picked me up from the locked estate gate saving another three.

Thankfully I had taken a second bike in case of an unforseen terminal mechanical. A third of the way into todays last epic climb, my rear tyre exploded. A knob had almost been cut off leaving a gaping hole in the casing. Smart thinking cut the burst tube into a patch strip, thick enough to cover the hole and protect the tube. It rather focuses then mind descending flat out on double track with Al just a blow out away from a crash.

Best couple of days riding in ages, hopefully Al, the picmeister will be along soon.

Did Al not have some cutlery and carbon wrapping to sort it?

There wasn't a tree for miles. We tried pushing the seatpost right down to splint the crack, but the internal diameter at the base of the tube is much larger.

I bought the bike in 08 second hand, I doubt they'd warranty it. I could still contact the original owner though, perhaps wishful thinking.

That was my first hope dashed as I stared towards the horizon and the setting sun.

Yep, same frame.

Contact McMoonter for "how to get discounts at campsites",

We rolled up to the Blair Atholl campsite's swish reception and asked what their rates were. The receptionist said we'd need two pitches for the three of us at a total of £40. I immediatly asked what their competitors facilities and rates were across the bridge. He stalled, then asked if we were riding bikes, we were collectively vague and shuffled together to hide the cars, 'wait here, I'll see what I can do'. He returned with a £15 offer for the three of us. Done deal.

looks like there was already fatigue in the place it cracked on that second shot - just above the weld?

Hard to say, there was no warning, there is a slight burr where the tubes hit each other after the crack. There is some helitape protecting the rear of the tube, that might look like a split.

No centre punching preceded this fail.

just above the weld on the lower shock mount - probably just dirt, though, I guess.

I always thought that was a weak spot on the Flux frames. Guess that's why they changed the mounting point on the revised model:

turner-4-turner program ::.
The Turner-4-Turner Trade-in Program allows a current Turner frame owner to send in their old Turner frame and receive a $600 credit off of the M.S.R.P of a brand new Turner frame. The frame trade-in program is extended to all Turner frames regardless of age or condition. Your old frame will then be recycled and you can feel good about doing your part to help the environment, not to mention having a new Turner to ride is the sweet icing on the proverbial cake.

Even with a $600 credit, the RRP in the UK is £2000.

For that reason I'm oot. 😯

I might email Turner the pics and see what they say, its a looooong shot.

I'd rather spend that sort of cash on an epic bike tour somewhere.

The top of Glen Tilt, the singletrack just before the Falls of Tarf suspension bridge. It was really dry. We did a second loop yesterday, Pitlochry - Strathtay - Edradynate - Loch Tummel, again powder dry.

you sure that's a crack and not just a sticker?

I was pretty certain it was a crack, my fingertip went inside the tube when I did the fingernail test.

Do you have a route map, or which OS map is it on? not too far from me (Dundee). How longs the loop?

Need something to test out my new flux, hopefully it wont have the same end as yours!!!

Nothing too epic in terms of distance or technical ability.

eithger of them 25km max and not too many black bits?

some judicious repositioning of the front mech might have worked as a ride out bloody carefully measure.

organic355 - I'll look out the maps and email you the routes later.
There is nothing 'black' on either.

Oh God, I'm moving to Perthshire in 2 weeks.... can't believe how excited I'm now getting.

Although, the reason I came to this thread was the Flux theme.... a DW-Link Flux is my only bike - I hope those pesky midges hadn't been drilling into the frame for blood 😉

I always carry a large Jubilee clip just in case of exactly that sort of failure. It's let me finish the ride and get home a couple of times now.
