Truativ Noir and MRP x1 setup? Anyone?

Fitting 1 x 9 to my TD-1, at the moment i'm running the Noir SS crank set and am trying to set up the MRP.
Now if i mount the chainring on the inside of the crank arm then the chain line is still well off. I've got it in line by putting spacers on the chain ring bolts.
This might not be clear but the chain ring is basically held off the spider by a spacer so isn't supported by the little lip, basically the weight is on the bolt itself.

Now i've taken it for a test ride and it runs sweet as a nut but my big concern is the ring being held just by the bolt obivously its spread over 4 but has anyone done this and had it work?

Cheers and hope that makes some sense but its the only way i can move the chainring towards the frame enough to get a chain line

Sounds like you've fitted the chainset wrongly in the first place.

Having worked in a bike shop for a number of years.....that's not the answer Mk1. The chainset seems to have a higher offset to provide better chainline when used as a singlespeed

Spacing out the chainring isn't a great idea... Best to run the chainring flush on the tabs and deal with the chainline being a little off...

Strange thing is with out the spacers I've got no chance of getting it to run. Sure the offset is the issue. Ordered a full chainset tonight so should be able to see if it's that much different

According to Truvativ the chainset has the same chainline as the Noir 3.3 so it sounds like your 'years' of working in a bike shop didn't extend to the workshop.

If the Truvativ s/s chainsets are anything like Race Face s/s chainsets then they are the same chainsets they just didn't fit an inner chain ring.

Additionally, Truvativ state the 68 and 73mm GPX BBs aren't compatible with chain guides - which seems odd but that's what the website says. This extra spacing would explain why the chainset is offset so much.

The device fits on the BB shell, so it's essentially a 73E fitting. The Truvativ Noir 3.3 is designed to fit 68, 68E, 73.(consult the Truvativ compatability chart on the SRAM website)
It won't space for 73E that's why you're having trouble spacing it.
you'll also have trouble with crankarms wallowing off if you try to ride it like that for any length of time.
You've got 2 options. face down the BB shell to suit a chain device and void your warranty, or get a new chainset.

Why not get rid of the chain device and fit an inner ring guide on the chainset - I think MRP and Blackspire do them and assuming the tabs are there on the crank like Race Face. Or a seatpost tube mounted upper guide - like a front mech. A short mech and correct legnth chain shouldn't come off unless you're doing proper gnarr extreme to the max sic radness.

And yet it was the answer! Funny. I hope your guiding is better than your mechanical or reading 'skills'.

Nice one MK1 but the chainset was fitted correctly and i've done nothing since that thread to change it...as Skyline pointed out its not meant to run with the device as the chainset has a 51mm chain line the device is 49/50mm chain line.

Perhaps you should improve your reading skills.

Funny, again, that I mentioned all that first too.

For the sake of being pedantic, as you had incorrectly fitted the BB (by fitting the chainguide) then the chainset would also be incorrectly fitted.

I had an MRP 1.x when I was running 1x9 and I thought it was awful! Bolts made of cheese and blocked with mud and detritus as soon as anything remotely woodland trail was ridden! Managed to get hold of a Paul Components chain keeper; superb product - neat and absolutely functional. Have heard that the Rohloff chainguide is also good, if not better.

No 1st thing you mentioned was that i'd fitted it wrong...my bike has a 68mm bb, needing a spacer either side with the chainset that i am running, i removed the spacer and fitted the chain guide. Making no difference to the BB width.

The guide does not have enough reach to line up with the chainring. Simple enough...still following MK1 or would you like even simpler language?

All of the Noir sets run a 51mm chainline or greater offset as i mentioned the guide however will only do 49/50mm so is out by 1mm causing rubbing in the gears and throwing the chain.

You went with the attitude of me fitting it wrong, everyone else had helpfull or at least useful suggestions. For a surveyor your really not the sharpest tool.

Now i'm going to leave it there because you sound like you want an arguement and i really can't be bothered with the attitude from you.

I didn't lead with any attitude, I simply and concisely put forward what I saw as the issue you had.

You responded with arrogance. Claiming that it couldn't possibly be the monkey banging the kit together that's made the error because 'having worked in a bike shop for a number of years'.

The facts are you've tried to fit together incompatible items. Having not checked before to see if they were compatible. Came on here looking for advice on why the incompatible parts you picked didn't fit together. Then have a go at someone who pointed out YOUR errors. Despite this I still offered [the right] advice and workable solutions. You then praise someone for giving the same. Are you genuinely surprised that I'm having a pop back?

For someone using the site to overtly advertise their company 'Skills Guiding' that seems very odd behaviour. It doesn't say a lot for your skills if you can't pick compatible items to run a 1x9 set-up with a chain guide. How are you going to cope when customers need to rely on you whilst on a ride? Based on this thread - badly.

Again you don't seem able to read very well. I am a Building Surveyor and you are certainly a tool.
