Just thinking I need more bike fitness and maybe a turbo might be the answer?

Depends; it can certainly improve cardiovascular fitness - but boredom is a real issue.
One good use I've found for them is getting the motivation to go out and ride in crap cold weather; 5 minutes on the turbo as a warm up, pretty soon the boredom and the overdoor inheating makes the pissing rain a really nice change.

Agree with Hazeii, boredom was the real off putting factor for me.
I've bought and then got rid of two in the last ten years. I tried watching films; listening to music; Manning TFU and just getting on with it but just found it depressing. Maybe because mine was in the garage and the "scenery" was pretty uninspiring.
I am sure they can be of some use, obviously better than doing nothing, but I much prefer getting out on the road bike even if it is dark, cold and wet.

Other than my actual bikes, my turbo is one of the best bits of cycling kit I've bought, I recommend the Sufferfest training videos, they are brilliant.

I think I'll just pretend I have one, it bores me rigid and so making dark wet nights on the bike even more appealing.
Cheers all, you echo my fears I had of a turbo.

Spend the money on some weights instead. Work on your leg/core/back strength
