moneysavingexpert.com misunderstands how Europe works on this point.

The UK law is the UK implementation of a European directive. There is no European law, but all the member states are expected to give simillar levels of consumer protection according to the directive. Before the directive the UK had 1 years protection, after its implementation it had the protection as stated in the link.
