Fair point, but language can be fun, and there’s no reason it can’ be a little ‘colourful’, in the right context. Meant to be a relaxed forum.

Not sure we can define how the mods want their forum to be, relaxed or not. Yes people exercised restraint, though as soon as a filter arrived people started treating it like a challenge – a bit pathetic IMO!

But isn’t that last one generally about as offensive as calling person of African descent a word that rhymes with digger?

What, ‘dyke’? (Dike, dik3, dyk3)? I don’t think so. I think Lesbian women use it to describe themselves. Like some Gay men use the word ‘queer’.

In fact, is censoring it not actually a bit homophobic?

TBH, there’s actually very little that needs censoring, as long as people can be respectful of the forum, and each other.

Coffeeking- I agree that excessive use of obscenities is just stupid, and a pain to others. But the forum is a place where ‘normal’, everyday language should be ok.

Bit of self-restraint is all it takes, And I think most people on here can exercise that. There will always be one or two idiots, and things can get a little fruity of a Friday night, I’ve noticed, but as long as people act in a responsible manner, then there shoon’t be a problem.

And I believe young black gentlemen may refer to each other as “niggaz” or some such. But it would still earn me a punch in the face if I did it!

RB – dyk3 is to lesbians what the “N” word is to black people – they apparently can use it themselves but we cant. I’m not sure how come but its not socialy acceptable. I have a gay mate who calls himself a poof and a few other things, but if you were to use it in a derogatory way he’d be offended. Its how you say it, and a forum is a bad place to convey pleasant humour. If you cant think of any other terminology to describe such a person maybe you shouldnt be thnking of it as a descriptor at all.

And so, as you well know RB, that is exactly WHY we need the swear filter: Because some idiots drop through the net, and they just can’t do that….

The point you have to remember is that although we all use the filtered language in the workplace and maybe even other such public places, you make a judgement on choice of language based on your immediate audience. Most of us filter our language in situations for example where your granny is sat next to you – well I do 🙂

That applies here. You have to remember that when you post on this forum you are publishing your comments to a huge audience, even if you only intend it to be read by a select few. It’s a bit like having a microphone on the table in the pub with your mates. If you new that microphone was broadcasting your conversation to huge speakers in the street you would temper your language.

This forum is predominantly aimed at adults, BUT it can be accessed by everyone, including children. An incident happened last month where a pornographic image was posted and one user was reading the forum with his daughter sat on his knee. You MUST consider the effect of your posts on the wider audience before you push the button. So you MUST temper your language on this forum. We really don’t care what other forums do. These are the rules of this one. And as a reminder, attempts to evade the swear filter WILL result in suspensions from the forum.

The problem with swearing is that as we all know things can get a little heated on here somethimes, thats when swearing becomes a problem – individuals start naming calling and it could get nasty. Personally I’d rather that wasn’t an option.

My favourites are the over-dubbing on some 80/90’s films Coming to America – Samuel Jackson saying ‘forget you’ (instead of **** you). also ‘judas Priest, Judas Priest, you fun my wife’?

    hora: “Yippy-kayay mother funker”

Actually if there was a lot of swearing on this forum then it would probably get blocked as offensive by a lot of workplace firewalls, so a swear filter may be a good thing!

Mark, I agree with you, even if nobody else does!

What’s the view on the deliberately misspelled stuff, whilst we’re here?

I happened to notice only a couple of days ago that the 5 top-of-the-page posts had a high quantity of yikes’s in them, so it just goes to show that it either gets heated a lot on here or people cant be trusted.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, Mark.

I totally agree with moderate filtering of rude words. There’s no need for certain language on here; as you say, we’re not in a pub with our mates. There may be those who simply don’t want to read profane expressions. And those people should be respected as well as everyone else. In real life, I can be incredibly foul mouthed, but I can also temper my language according to the situation. And this is not the place for such language.

There has to be a balance, and it can be tricky deciding where to draw the line. Hence the reason for this thread. Things just suddenly seemed very restrictive!

I think the balance is right, on here.

    An incident happened last month…

(Hangs head in shame) I’m still very nervous, every time I link to an image off tinternet. I felt terrible about that. Din’t have a clue it had happened, though! I’d put a pic on my own Fotopic account, if I was in anyway unsure, from now on.

What’s the view on the deliberately misspelled stuff, whilst we’re here?

What, like does not in any way, hazzunt, shoon’t, coon’t, woodunt, etc?

That’s just rong, is not it?

I wasn’t actually aware of that, thanks. I thought it was acceptable. There you go- always something to be learned.

Met a group called ‘Dykes on Bikes’, once. They seemed to be very proud of their title. Can be a bit confusing, sometimes, figuring out what is acceptable or not.

If we think a user is misspelling a word that would otherwise be picked up by the filter deliberately then we will consider that swear filter evasion.

Can we add “dijical” to the swear filter? 🙂

Oh and as a recent thread pointed out:

Personally I don’t think any swearing should be allowed, and “disguised” swear words should earn an instant ban. If you can’t put your views accross without swearing then I pity you. There are plenty of words in English without having to resort to swearing, so why make your online persona appear to be a complete fool?

But its about inclusion and exclusion for racist/homophobic/etc words though.

Granted, but then, how is ‘swearing’ defined? Just words that are deliberately used to cause offence, or does it include words used in a non-offensive manner, but which some people find offensive? And is there a consensus on what is, or isn’t, offensive?

As I said earlier, something like ‘I fell off my bike and landed on my arse’, is that offensive? Personally, I’d say no. The word ‘arse’ is in the English dictionary, and has been there since it’s inception! And, I would be using it in the correct context. The ‘c’ word is as well, I am aware, but that is never really used in anything other than an offensive context, hence it should rightly be banned.

And what if someone wanted genuine advice on a delicate mater? EG; Substituting the word ‘penis’ with ‘willy’, would be a bit far, don’t you think? Surely better to use the ‘correct’ term? Surely adults can use the correct word, without resorting to childish giggling!

Even racist/homophobic terms, if used in the context of discussing racism or homophobia, should be allowed. Correct use of language, in the correct context, is surely not a problem?

Personally I think it’s a bit pathetic that you’re not allowed to swear, it’s aimed at adults but kids can read it too – big deal. Most kids are more potty mouthed than many of the people on here. But y’know it’s not my forum.

Anyway, if you need to recharge your swear glands here is every single swear word from every single epsiode of The Sopranos

Certainly the best thing would be constant vigilance. The “report this post” function does this, if enough people don’t like certain words that have not been banned they can be added to the list of swearwords. Obviously within reason but it should work fine.

Is the banning of people who disguise their swear words done on a regular basis? As I read those disguised words quite often!!

Like everything Rob, we need to be made aware of any rule breaking. There’s been over a hundred thousand posts last month and we can’t read them all. As has always been the case, don’t assume that because a rule infringement remains posted that we have approved it.

Is it wrong to type ****ing tho? I initially only starred out the vowel in my rant the other day but I edited it cos I felt a bit ashamed.

Well Bimbler I can tell you that my 11 year old son is not ‘potty mouthed’ and he often sits beside me when I read posts on here in the evening. Obvioulsy I wouldn’t click on this post when he was there as I would expect swearing on this post. But I prefer swearing to be filtered out sensibly.
