Just thought I'd stick this up as a discussion thread as a few people seem to be over in Aug 2016. So using it to see who else is going to be up for a days riding, feel free to put other random Morzine date around that time if you wish, but i'll only be riding on that particular day.
I'm proposing meeting around Torico bike shop as it's fairly central and not too busy usually at that time of morning, for say 9.15-.9.30 and then either up the Pleney or shoot over to Super Morzine.
Ideally at some stage around 1 ish i'll meet up with Mrs Weeksy and my boy for lunch, but that depends on where they actually end up spending their day, currently Avoriaz has been discussed, maybe rafting... Who knows... But if anyone has any ideas on what the wife and the boy can do then please fill me in.
LAst time I was there I took the lift up and then walked over to Les Gets and had a look round as the PPDS event as being hosted there, but I honestly think that will be too much walking so Avoriaz is more likely I guess. They'll have the car so could in theory meet us wherever.
BTTT as some may have missed this.
As mentioned on emails, I'm in the area and hopefully will be free subject to childcare arrangements/Mrs Stoner returning from the Liverpool Tri. Be good to see some faces.
BTTT in case anyone else is there.
Getting closer now and would still like some riding buddies that day, just to make Mrs Weeksy happy.
ooh hello I arrive on the 13th for 2 weeks with the now ex mrs and her 2 oldest and my young one so a day or so out actually having a days holiday sounds very appealing.
May have the eldest in tow as he rides but could well be up for a meet up .. I however fractured a vertebra in my spine on saturday after a particularly silly accident on the bike so not sure how Gnarr im gonna be but early in the hol's is the best way to find out .. I know/Knew some of the of piste stuff over Les Gets side less over in morzine as its been 4 years since i have been there but up for an explore !
I'm DTR
Ha ha I didn't see this till today. Having exchanged messages before on routes I was thinking of joining (assuming that was ok). My plan was to be in the Alps for 2 weeks mid August and I will try and make it over. A rest at lunch is ok for me 😉
Brilliant lads, we'll keep the thread going over the coming weeks and plan on meeting up at Torico 9ish-9.30 and then heading out.
I'm a long way from Gnar don't worry, exploring is good, depending on what's decided i may dropm down from the 200mm rig to the AM version on the day, but i don't mind a pedal or two 🙂
Im all gnar so dont make it too pedally
Im off the bike for 5 weeks and never the fittest going up at 15 stone. so lifts as much as possible for me please !!
I'm no lightweight Mak, i can give you a stone easy 🙂
I'm not too bad fitness... but if i wanted to pedal 70km i'd be going to the Ridegway not to Morzine 😉
HA im hoping not to have put that extra stone on with no exorcise for a month
All sounds good though let us know nearere the time if its a Full or open face kinda day !
I'll be running my FF as i'm incompetent, also full armour lol.
I'm around from the 2nd August with the family, missus and twin girls who are 7, who are very friendly and happy to play with other kids.
I'm taking a capra out this year and I'd love to ride with others as I rode alone last year and it's OK but you have to ride Conservatively in case of a stack.
I've been riding over 20yrs and live in south wales so I'm not too shabby
Email in profile and I'll bookmark this thread.
Hopefully see some of you soon
Dirtyboy
Staying opposite rhodos bar so local to the town
Staying at the Montriond end of town, close to the Les Gets road junction. Arriving on 13th Aug for a fortnight of uplifted Funduro. I've been quite a few time before so will happy to show people around if they want, but bear in mind that I'm happy enough to do the odd bit of DH but when it goes red I start to worry a bit. Mind you the gradings seem all a bit bonkers.
I'm buying a pass for the entire domaine.
Dirtyboy- where in S Wales are you? I'm near Brynamman.
OP Avoriaz is no picture post card in the summer so unless they are doing something specific there you/we've time to think of a better lunch spot. Mont Caly above Les Gets has a fabulous view and a little local style place,
.
And I'm SO keen to do the ride down to Samoens via La Bourgeoise. Anyone here fancy sharing a taxi/ organising a shuttle?
Ambrose I'm in Newport, think I'll be driving back when you arrive
Second the recommendation for Mt Caly, it is gorgeous. Lac Montriond is also really nice, as is the Upper Dranse Valley. And if you can get over to La Fond de la Combe, in Cirque Sixt Fer a Cheval- do it, just take my word. Ridiculously stupendous scenery. Jaw dropping. With manicured paths for the whole family 🙂
Brilliant stuff guys, really looking forward to it and meeting up.
Ambrose,
PM me. I'm out there all summer and will be doing the bourgeoisie descent with Mrs Stoner doing a pick up in the van at the other end at least once . If I have your details we can be in touch and maybe do it together as well as catch up for other days too.
Ambrose, yes if I come I will 100% want to do that ride (I won't say guide as I'm so slow I'll be at the back but I've done it twice so know the way). Given the route help you've given me in the past it would be great to meet up. I was even going to suggest Weeksy finishes his day with that and his wife collects him from Samoens town centre - if the weather is good the view of Mont Blanc is stunning and there is usually an ice cream van at Lac Joux Plan for Weeksy Junior. May need some planning and perhaps not so convenient as he's got to take his bike back to the hire shop in Morzine.
Stoner I predict you'll want to do it more than once and that you'll want to explore Samoens loft side and the valley, rude not too eh ? 8)
I must do some bus research, not as well served as Swiss postbus network but we used some busses on Trail Addiction-Dest X
i can't seem to embedd Flickr any longer, from Sheldon of this parish, ride in to Bourgesoie (cross visible on hill top) from Lac Joux Plan
EDIT: screen grab

From cross, valley and Samoens below

Stoner should be the route planner being local
Morning Morzine and/or Les Gets trails & making way to Mont Caly lunch 1-2. Col Ecrenaz to Morizne - final trails from Stoner's little black book ?
Morning Morzine lunch Mont Caly, Les Gets Trails, Lac Joux Plan for 5pm icecream, Samoens descent for beer in town at 6-6:30 (might be too inconvenient for Weeksy to retrace steps to shop and closing time question)
Ambrose looked that up, seems like a stunning valley with high peaks all around 🙂
Stoner if you want to hook up and show me some trails, lunch will be on me. I'm around from the 2nd of August till the 11th I think? Cheers DB
was lying in bed with tablet looking at the Fonde de la Combe area. Looks great for a day out walk. Will def take the family Stoner out there one day for a yomp
db - yes, of course. My place is in Montriond so just a few minutes ride from town. PM me at my email address and we can hook up over the weeks you're there. I expect to be around from the weekend of the TDF until the sometime during the week before the Aug bank holiday weekend so bound to get a chance to ride out together.
I reckon the chery/d'encrenaz/caly/bois noirs route would be a nice one to get a few people on. See the other thread.
BTW, this may be useful for people to work out who's around and when. feel free to fill it in if you like.

Great idea the spreadsheet. I have already broken the rules, rebel without a clue!!
I have put the resort i'm going to be in, M for Morzine, P for Pila and LA for Les Arcs. The ? denotes no actual plan so happy to be anywhere within 4 to 5 hours drive.
I am out there with my 16 year old lad. We are on trail bikes but will be full face and body armoured, in the hope that we can survive a month of riding without anything serious going awry.
The first week we are with friends in a chalet with their teenage kids, super friendly bunch so happy to ride/drink/eat/bbq with anyone that plays nice.
Getting very excited now... I miss the mountains.
Thanks for the good words folks. I'm getting a wee bit excited too. Mrs A and myself are child free this year so I've been told to bring my roadbike as well- can I put it on the lifts?
FWIW I'm easy to spot, 6'4" and wear Hawaiian shirts.
I leave for morzine next Sunday for 2 weeks, I really can't wait,., I feel like a kid on Xmas eve
I expect to be around from the weekend of the TDF until the sometime during the week before the Aug bank holiday weekend
Living the dream 🙂
I can't get to spreadsheet due to work laptop not allowing it... but i'm only there for the 1 day.
I've put you down for the 15th then.
As mentioned Mrs S will be on her way back from the Liverpool Tri, so I might book my kids into the language school for the day to free up my day too. Will see how it pans out.
I've emailed Stoner, Jambalaya and Ambrose about trails and general advice and thought I'd add my details.
I'll be there from around 7th to 11th, depending how quickly we get around the TDMB. Camping in Morzine most likely.
I'll be with my sister and her husband who have never ridden in the Alps and prefer more xc type stuff. It would be great to hook up anyway.
hi hb.
Something that looks like it might have come from you ended up in my spam box, and gmail thinks it's all written in czech! You might want to try again as I think hotmail and gmail are arguing over it.
may well see you in Aug then.
Oh right, will try again.
Im Staying on the The Montrond/Morzine border opposite the Ridge Hotel so have to get back that way so would be happy to share a taxi bus if with the op if the decent is worth it !
Staying over in Samoens from 4-12 August with miss's and x2 daughters, if any of you guys fancy coming over for some of the singletrack, I will be riding alone.
I'm used to riding bikepark stuff in the Alps but find myself now to be an overweight 50 year old and fancy some good singletrack but don't fancy getting stuck out in a back valley on my own.
Would be happy to give people a lift up to Lac Joux Plan after to get home, or even meet there to get the run down into Samoens.
I'm on my holidays, if it costs me a few euro to get back to meet Mrs Weeksy I really don't care.
Would it be viable for her to collect me from there or better for us to head back to morzine?
Extremenik I'll give you a shout closer to the time, as your out around the same time as me
Dirtyboy-no problems, will look forward to it!
Getting closer now, just a month until we head to Burgundy. Then down to Morzine for the day 🙂
Looking forward to meeting up with you lads.
How's the plans then guys ?
Who's looking at meeting up on the morning of the 15th ?
Just arrived at the Marmotte d'or in Montriond . We were making good progress so pushed on to make it for last orders today instead of an overnight en route.
Disappointingly the road from Tanninges to the praz de lys Road bridge is still as ropey as ever. They've patched a few strips but some of the apex are going to be hairy for the TDF descent.
We're planning on watching the race on the final descent near the plateau de nyon since we will have kids and no desire to jam ourselves in around the joux plan.
I'm still hopeful of being up for a ride on the 15th. Stitches will have been out of my finger for a week so should be ok to ride.
looking over the balcony on to the road at the Montriond end of the base of the Col de Joux vert climb and there's a constant stream of cyclists setting out to attack it. Great to see, but a little too much rapha for my liking 🙂
I'll be out there until the 20th.. email in profile, however I will be on the downhill bike as the capra is staying in the UK
Don't worry Stoner, i won't be doing Lycra 😉
I may have my Les Gets jersey on from 2014 though 🙂
Weeksy I am still planning on being there, have not booked accomodation yet but plan is to arrive afternoon of 14th, ride on 15th and maybe 16th then move on.
Enjoy the TdF Stoner, remember to post in the stage thread !
Brilliant lads... Can't wait now... i'm just hoping not to get even fatter and slower before i go as a few weekends of not much cycling coming up.
Better news is that the drive over will be nicer too as I bought the comfy Mondeo 🙂
Still need to work out a plan though for what Mrs Weeksy and our boy are going to do while we're out on the trails
i'm just hoping not to get even fatter and slower before i go as a few weekends of not much cycling coming up.
I am a bit worried about holding you all up 😳 I hate doing that so if it looks like that I'll cut out a bit early and head for the lunch stop
The new car is perfect for this sort of trip. Stoner can help I am sure on ideas, drive up to Linderets "goat village" (bit touristy) then drive over for an ice cream and view of Mont Blanc from Joux Plane (top of TdF climb on this Saturday's stage), lunch with us, afternoon at Morzine pool (not sure whether its gets more sun am or pm) ?
I think most of us worry in that context, "will i be quick enough up hill", "will i be holding them up donwnhill", "will i be able to do the trails they do"
But as with most MTB group rides, you find your place in the group quickly, both uphill and down hill, you work out who you want to be behind and who you want to be in front of.
I'd say on average i hold my own both up and down, but when the going gets jumpy and gappy, i'm WAY out of my depth. I'm just a hang on kind of rider instead of a flair riders who flies in the sky.
I'm getting a bit excited about this too, and also need to stake my claim to be the slow one at the back. Please be nice to the bloke in the Hawaiin shirt.
Can someone remind me again, where and when are we meeting?
Todays going to be my fist outing on a bike for 5 weeks after fracturing spine so I'm staking my claim for the back as well
😀
What a comedy group
Frodo's finger
My two broken knees
Your back
After the ride we'll all have been blinded by Ambrose's shirt
It's bit like that joke about whether you have to be able to run faster than a bear, no just faster than your friend
Weeksy the only gaps I'll be hitting are the ones I didn't see - the Les Gets 4x track is laugh though
stereotypical middle aged men with ailments .. done 2 solid hours today and whilst a bit sore should be ok in three weeks . had to have a word with myself however as they have just rebuilt a small jump line in my local spot and without thinking i rode the first two jumps as its on a trail .. then thought what the fluck are you up too and walked away with my head down from all the cool kids !
Torico.
Is just up road from bar Robinson and Rhodos bar. Just down the hill from the square towards church/river.
9ish to 9.30 tops.
Mrs Weeksy ain't feeling it. Women!
Who's taking me to burgundy then if I break my legs?
Plan A - don't break yourself
Plan B - we'll think of something if necessary 🙂
Wheres my comment gone? I'll say again, it appears to be a bit pedally for the DH bike so I'll have to pass
I would expect limited pedalling, mostly marked bike trails and if we do the off-piste after lunch I may well be pushing up the 200m climb anyway.
I'll just rock up and see what's cooking maybe. Im happy to take anyone off and mooch the DH tracks if they're not feeling it. Show them some off piste* etc
Edit * what's left of it.
I'll be in Morzine over the first week in August, not done any proper riding in 9 years so should be interesting!
Added my name to the spread sheet thing 🙂
Ok, so I have somewhat lost track.
To refresh;
I am in Morzine from Saturday 30th July till Saturday 6th August with friends, happy to be social but it is our kids fist time so will be tailoring the days to suit their stamina/confidence etc plus we are planning some other activities, rafting etc.
So from the Saturday 6th August up to and including Tuesday 9th my son (16 and capable) and myself (old and incapable) are very much up for a more out there type xc ride taking in some of the lesser visited spots. I am near incapable of using a GXP file or anything similar so would be very happy if anyone could show us around. We are in a van so can travel to meet up or we have a spare seat if that helps.
The plan is to camp somewhere those few days so any campsite recommendations would be good, we are set up so we could just pull up a set up anywhere but showers are always a godsend.
After that we are going to get over to Pila for a couple of days before I take my lad over to Les Arcs for the afternoon of the 13th as he has a few days with Trail Addiction prior to volunteering on the Trans Savoie.
I am then camping in Bourg St Maurice from 13th to the 20th on my jack so anyone out there then it would be good to meet up for rides/beers etc.
Hopefully some of those dates work for people....
Roll on Friday and fingers crossed for a trouble free ferry crossing!!
Was there last week, found a lovely little trail to avoid the brake bumps starting from going straight over the first switch back on the panoramic trail of chatel. A long, single track path all the way down to the goat village. Highly recommended.
Also if you can get someone to show you col du cu, it makes a great escape from the crowds.
I've swapped my bike from the DH weapon 😉 to a more gentle 180mm Pivot Mach 6 carbon for the day. I think the DH bike would have been too much for me in honesty.
Full face, check
knee armour, check
body armout, check
Snowcard insurance, check.
I think i'm all good.
we are getting drunk at lunchtime to make the afternoon a bit more exciting though yeah 🙂 I'm sure i'll jump more after a few tequilas
😉
@ Mbnut I should be about Bourg st Maurice them dates and will most properly meet your son as I am helping Ali and the team on the Trans-savoie too ( I live in the area).I could possibly ride Morzine as its been a few years since my last ride there and will be racing in Samoens on the 6-7th (mud tyres at the ready).
5 of us will be there from 12 - 19th. 4 being Morzine virgins. I don't mind meeting up on the 15th. My email is in my profile...I don't mind Pedally once I'm at the top and travelling horizontally.
2 weeks!
Bring it on. I'm excited
It's all looking good. Not ridden for obvious reasons but finger improving so may go out in the next day or 2.
The town is feeling good. Post TDF high
I've arrived, going to grab a lift pass tomorrow and do a few shakedown runs on the pleney
My days added to the spreadsheet. Bit sporadic and looking like I'll miss the 15th on current plans... which could change. I'm based in central Morzine for weekends and the back end of the month.
I'm really sorry folks- I might have messed up the spreadsheet. I think I have returned it to its correct state, can you all check please.
Sorry 🙁
See you all soon.
There's a spreadsheet?

Page 1, post 22 I think.
Hey Guys - great thread. I'm out in Les Gets till the 12th & well up for a meet up. Couple of days I can't do due to riding with the kids, kids birthdays & wedding anniversaries etc but otherwise I can be pretty flexible.
I can easily ride over to Morzine on the first lift or meet 1/2 way - whatever...
Anyone around?
I'll be on a bouncy 160mm bike which is more capable than me on the downs and pedals upwards too but is also happy on chair lifts so I'm up for whatever- any break-bump dodging routes would be great. Samoens sounds fab.
Ade
p.s. I have a pass for tomorrow (Thursday) a.m. if anyone is about.
