Just in case anyone else is struggling to get an old cartidge bottom bracket out here is a tip I picked up from my days in the bike shop:

Just bolt the removal tool into the bottom bracket. It stops the tool slipping and rounding splines. I use the Shimano tool as it’s nice and shallow. Then I bolt the tool in using a crank bolt and an M8 wide washer (ebay). Then you can get medieval without having to worry about the tool slipping. Just remember to back the bolt off as you unscrew the BB. Hope that helps.

A mate welded a long bar on to my stuck campy bb. Came out easy peasy.

I’ve gone as far as to braze the BB spindle to the cup to get a particularly stubborn one out.

Tacx make a range of BB removal tools that screw into the BB axle much like the OP’s neat solution.

Yep, I’ve done exactly that OP! Hot waters worked well for other things in the past too (mainly jars 😳 )
