Steel with XTR or Ti with SLX?

Hi

After a whole heap of thinking about it I have decided to buy a HT to build up

The shortlist is along the lines of 456/Ti 456 (when its out), Handjob/Hummer, Soul/Soda, Bluepig/Ti Bluepig etc etc etc

You get the idea

For my budget I could have a steel bike built with pimpy kit or else the Ti with a very modest spec

Whatever I buy will be "it"
Theres no question of going povvo spec Ti as a project and swapping the bits as I get some more cash - at least not initially - although it has occurred to me that Ti will outlast the components so I could possibly upgrade a long way in the future

Thoughts?

Ti then swap the bits out as they inevitably wear out. SLX chainrings will last you a year tops in my experience, I think it stands for short life xpectancy.

Having seen a few Ti frames break the notion of a Ti lasting forever isn't sadly the reality.

It if it were me I'd go steel XTR.

hopefully your frame won't
in a few years it could pay off and you'le still have a nice ti frame with the inevitable upgrades that follow a nice frame

id want to make sure i factored in a decent set of forks too, plus if you go xtr then it will cost you to keep it at that.

to be awkward can i say alu/xt?

only kidding, never felt any difference between ti and steel besides weight so id say steel, xt and a holiday/ skills day/ new kit/ pressie for the mrs.

lots of ti lovers will disagree im sure and im sure there is a difference, i just didnt 'get' it myself.

There's a pretty big range in prices of the frames there, especially in Ti- if the new ti456 costs around 7-800, that would be a grand cheaper than a Hummer, and around 5-600 less than the Ragley.
You will certainly be able to build an xtr fuelled T456, and probably a Ragley Ti for the same money as a SLX equipped Hummer.

My point? you need to state your budget

Ti 456 for 6-700??

I kicked myself for missing the 799 run out on the first ones but surely it'll be more than that wont it?

translating this question into "expensive frame and cheap groupset or cheaper frame and more expensive groupset" and the answer is EASY. Get the more expensive frame. Derailleurs will get bent, chainrings will break, but your frame should last and last

Personally I'd never go XTR - XT/SLX is enough.

That aside, riding a 2010 Hummer and love it, I've had a Soda before and this just suits me better. BUT - If I was buying now, I'd go steel, probably custom.

ive got a blue pig and am currently considering selling my soul (the real one not a cotic) for a ragley ti. So id say ti with slx then put xt on as they wear out . I had a similar choice when i first got my ti road bike it was steel with duraace or ti with 105 i went ti. Then bit by bit upgraded now its duraace and ti and im so glad it is ti that said the steel ragley rides superb its just id like a ti one

Just corrected it I reckon 7-800 if it's built in the Far East instead of Tennessee.

I'd go ti & slx or similar. The bike will ride way better and prices of spares for xtr is ridiculous.

Save weight on the wheels if you can.

If you buy 'carefully', you can have both.

Also worth looking at discount bikes on Pauls etc, the high spec ones and then stripping the bits (sell the frames/shocks/etc).

I've a 456 TI with full XTR, but the XTR is from an 2006 Enduro I bought s/h, ran then stripped and used/sold - and most of the other stuff has been bought in the sales/ebay etc.
