I think its reached the point where we need an official warning as to which threads to avoid. Without going through the soul destroying, head-melting, utterly depressing feeling of having to read them.

You know the ones. Where 'The (usual) Big Hitters' take the concept of a discussion or idea, which might be of interest to anyone, then they metaphorically kick the living ****ing shit out it

Posting endless, dreary, entrenched and repetitive drivel so that anyone/everyone else nips off to open a vein/develop a smack habit etc rather than be dragged into the mire by commenting

So... Heres an idea. If anyone spots a thread generating into this, they could pop a simple recognizable code-word on the top. A bit like masochists with their 'safe' word ie: 'Armageddon'

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTrOb8zyrZk

In fact we could use 'Armageddon'

    or 'circle of despair'

What do you think? Any other suggestions for the name of the tag?

The tag "TJ Argues" appears with alarming regularity......

or just a wee symbol of said bird?

  5. camo16 - Member

Silhouette of bombers, perhaps? Surely some IT whizz could knock one up?

The tag "TJ Argues" could basically be applied to any thread he posts on and maybe removed for the odd exception that proves the rule. Shame really.

Mind you, the same could be said for others too...

"pathological arguist" is my suggestion for the tag.

Or a step further, we could add the tag "pathological arguist = <insert name here> and then have competitions to see who's the most incapable of normal human interaction by the size of their tag in the tag cloud

    tag cloud: http://singletrackworld.com/forum/tags/

Mind you, my suggestion breaks the rules so I suggest you don't follow it http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/tags-the-rules

you know this for a fact?

I like to try and spot those threads before opening them, then see if I'm right. Eg. today there is a thread called 'petrol prices' that has got to 7 pages. I bet quite most of us could summarise that thread before even reading it.

Being of a nervous disposition, Id want a safe word that was no longer than one syllable long and could be screamed from the wrong side of a ball-gag.

Its possible this also applies to a forum tag.

    I checked.

    You're right.

No sound (in an open plan office), but i think this is the one with a safe word. I could be wrong. Whatever.

*looks at the list of names posting on this thread*

Hmmm.. all names that post frequently enough that I recognise them and have a rough idea of their online personas. No sign of any non-regulars.

Aren't you (we) all "big hitters"?

If you haven't convinced someone after making - say - 5 posts in a thread, you should reconsider whether you are wasting your time.

Saying the same thing again and again with increasing emphasis and decreasing receptiveness to others' views is boring and boorish and changes nothing.

Generally I ignore anything with more than 3 pages unless it's a picture thread as it'll have turned into a "I'm more right than you!" affair.

If I do read on and certain names start appearing I just ignore it.
    Easy peasy!

i don't think the serial egotists have any intention of convincing anyone of anything except to prove their own magnificence to themselves.

  34. TandemJeremy - Member

trailmonkey - for me is definitely about trying to convince people or often to answer points that people have made in response to my posts

    Could you elaborate?
