    Will this combination work? I read somewhere that XTR M9000 shifters can only be used with an XTR rear mech which seems odd to me.

    Yes, it will work fine. That information was probably from before XT 11 speed was out because at that time you could only use M9000 shifters with M9000 rear mechs.
