iam thinking of gettin some rollers but not sure if i'm better better of with a turbo as it's just to keep up my riding time for when the weather gets shity...pro's&cons...
Rollers - Warm up/down tool and that's about it.
Turbo - Can replicate "real" riding much more.
Go for a turbo.
turbo if you want to do proper hard training
As the above say, also prepare yourself for sweating like a pig on a spit. . . . .it ain't pretty, but it does make you feel like you've done a f*cking amazing work out. ๐
rollers are great for tuning ballance. we used to have some allez ones that also generated huge amounts of static, we earthed bikes withcrock clips to radiator. ditto the sweating bit.

Agreed - Rollers good for warm up / balance etc - turbo best for harder workouts and you don't need to concentrate any where near a smuch leaving more time of the MTB DVD's on the telly, in the garage...........mmmm turbo's calling out to me
youre better off getin a spare wheel with dedicated tyre . normal ones overheat then blister.
Tacx trainer tyres are what you need fella, work a treat.

do they ? must pedal harder.

totally disagree. I have rollers with resistance.. plenty hard enough to get a real sweat on.. just change up through the gears to make it harder. Develops good pedaling technique and of course mimics 'real' riding more than a turbo as you have to concentrate and 'ride' to stay on
You can also add wheels and turn them into a free motion set of rollers
Have both and prefer rollers. You can still have a good hard session on rollers, just takes alot of concentration. I use mine to do 30mph+ efforts and find I get good workout and leg burn. Also just prefer the feel of rollers.
30mph on rollers? If you bailed at that speed it's fair to say you'd be pretty f*cked! ๐ Realistically if he's never used rollers it'll be a while before he's knocking out decent consistent speeds comfortably that he could actually class as "training". Forget the wobbling bollocks and get a trainer! If you get bored and want a bit more of a challenge then get some rollers and try and beat Mr 30mph! ๐
Im guessing you dont have rollers, if you come off you dont go anywhere. I would suggest to anyone to try them as they really are alot easier than people make out, within 10 mins you'll be up and get better v quickly. Thanks for the mr 30mph comment above, I wasnt showing off, that again shows you dont know rollers. They are not that hard.
I use both for different things.
Rollers are great for anything sub-max, they are not that hard to master, 20-30min and I was fine, couple of longer sessions and everything becomes second nature. Much less boring to be sat on rollers.
Turbos are good for flat out efforts because you don't have to worry about balance and can concentrate 100% on the effort.
If I could only have one or the other it would be the rollers. Riding on rollers is far more natural, you just ride like your out on the road, turbo however feels very different.
Prefer a trainer myself, but rollers are good too.
I have fluid trainer and it feels very realistic. I've noticed the improvement more in my fitness than when I was using rollers.
Watching mtb videos while on a turbo or rollers is a bad idea....
it get's messy when you get too enthusiastic and start getting air...
