Hi all, just fitted a brand new set of Reba dual air to a frame, with no manual to hand I checked the + pressure which was at 90, then checked the - pressure which was zero. Used shock pump to inflate to 100psi which was fine for a minute then the seal blew from the top of the leg with quite a pop, I had not put any force on the forks for this to happen. Pressures were within the data on the the fork.
So question is really have I done something stupid? Is my fork now in need of repair?
First set of forks I have set up so any advice/pee taking is welcome.
Cheers
Sonnyjim
You mean the seals that the stanchions slide into?
Only way that could happen is if there's a seal gone internally at the bottom of the upper leg. Send them back...
Yes that's the ones, so you reckon a problem internally with the fork then?
As IA said - they had lost all pressure in the first place which probably indicates a leak, and then they blew the seal. Take em back to the seller.
I've got much the same problem with my Rebas, which are a long way out of warranty. Quite happy taking them to bits, but do you know which seal is the likely culprit, and can it be replaced easily enough?
They are new so will not be taking them to bits, looks like it's a call to Merlin tomorrow.
Cheers for the replys.
Haha no wasn't suggesting you take yours to bits. I was merely hijacking your thread to ask about mine ๐
offthebrakes - have you been inside them before?
Manual on the sram website for full service, but it'll be one of the o-rings on the air piston assembly. Have em apart, and get replacements the same size.
You need: a hammer, circlip pliers, 15wt + 5wt oil, 5mm, and a socket for the top cap. I forget which size*. ideally a 6 side one not a star, it's soft alloy.
*"the one in the top of my toolbox" size, is all I remember ๐
I'm just after doing this service - recommend EvilHomerSimpson on eBay for all the O rings etc and a handy diagram showing you where to put them.
It's a 24mm socket for the top cap, btw.
The manual on the SRAM website is fairly easy to follow. If a mechanical klutz like me can perform this service, it can't be that difficult.
NB: When you finish the service and have the forks back together, remember to inflate the positive chamber BEFORE the negative one. Only got that nugget of info off here as I'm not sure it stated that in the SRAM manual.
Cheers guys, most helpful.
Thanks again chaps, ordered the O ring set as suggested and fitted the air spring side ones yesterday. Seems to have solved the problem although not had a chance to test-ride yet.
One question: The damper side rings come with a couple of washers and spacers. Any idea what they are for? They aren't mentioned on the otherwise excellent diagram that comes with the kit.
Ta.
Not all travel spacers? Got a pic of them?
Not got a camera to hand. Definitely not travel spacers though, much too small. I think they might be crush washers for the nuts/bolts at the bottom of the legs.
No matter, I'll see if the air spring fix holds before I take them apart again to do the damper, and see if I can match them up to anything. Need to buy some 5wt oil too.
