Roadie Q: Shimano RS10 wheels

Well I've got 'em and have no complaints. But I've not ridden road for long and have nothing to compare them against. They is cheap and my proper roadie mate described them as bombproof.

I've done over 2000 miles in the last 7 months on a set. Buckled the rear in a big crash in the first few hundred miles. Trued it up, and its been fine since.
The other day the front wheel felt really rough, although it was spinning well. Took it apart and regreased the bearings and its pretty much good as new.
They roll well, they don't flex loads (although I'm not someone who would notice). They're not the lightest, nor the heaviest, but for a cheap wheelset they're very good. I'm looking for a new wheelset for summer riding and racing, but I'll keep the RS10s for the winter months.
They work well and are reliable. If you want a wheelset for hill climbing and racing there's better options, but for everything else they're good.

Cool. The thing is that they come on my new bike. Now, I have a set of Mavic Open Pros on Ultegra hubs that I took off my old bike. However, the front will need a rim replacement soon, and the rear was hit by a car a month or so ago. A mate of mine, who is a professional bike mechanic, has managed to true the rear, but there is a chance that the rim may need replacing as well.
I was just wondering, in light of the above, whether the RS10s are worth sticking with, or should I use my Mavics. I suspect the answer is the latter.

Run the RS10s until you have a bit of spare cash lying around, then get some new rims built onto the ultegra hubs (open pros are a good choice). Then use them in the summer, RS10s in the winter. What I'd do anyway.

On the face of it, that would appear to bean ideal solution. However, I was planning on selling my other bike, and would need a set of wheels to stick on it.

Had an RS10 for a few months, but had issues with snapping spokes, and even more issues in getting spares, as all the Shimano Service centres / Madison always had long lead times.
Since then have used RS20's which were better, but prefer Fulcrum, currently using both 5's and 7's with no issues

I hear snapping spokes is quite common with these wheels.
I do have the option of upgrading the wheels to Mavic Aksiums: Any thoughts on those?

Done about 5000 miles on a pair, including a few cross races - nuff said!
I only regreased the hubs twice, and never went out of true, well recommended. Was worried about factory wheels as normally only go handbuilt - these were on a bike I bought, and work well as my spare wheels now that they are a bit older - I bring them out for rough roads and cross races.

I've been using the ultra cheap R500s all this year. They are my purchase of the year, I love stuff that is simply good. Much better than my previous daily wheels Aksiums and I can buy nearly three sets of the R500s for the price of some Aksiums.
BTW anyone had trouble with Aksiums shifting to one side? three blokes and me have had to have them re dished.
