I just took out some AA cover for my car.

AA have a great deal on at the moment, but I managed to get a stupidly cheap deal using Quidco.

My car is a bit older, so I figured that the AA's Parts and Garage Bills cover would be a good idea (they cover the first £500 of most claims, up to 5 claims per year, with very low excess). It's got a lot of really, really good reviews, I did quite a lot of digging online.

With the AA discount, I got:

Roadside Assistance
At Home
National Recovery
Parts and Garage cover

for £156 per year (which is a big saving already).

But, if you go through Quidco, because the total package cost is over £151, they offer £80 cashback 🙂

So the total cost for a years full recovery and parts cover is £76 🙂

(i'm not holding my breath on the renewal cost, but it's peace of mind for my first year of motoring at least)

That is an amazing price!I should really sort out breakdown cover for my car, had put it off so far as it never seemed good value for money.

How does this quidco stuff work?
Do the offers have a limited time frame? - i'm not going to be able to apply till the weekend.

This offer is available for another 4 days, Rusty.

Sign up for Quido with just an email address. You then MUST click on the offer on the Quidco site which will take you to the AA site to complete your purchase as normal (so that they can claim the credit for referring you).

The Quidco cash will appear in your account in a while (sometimes it's a few weeks, sometimes a few months). Then you just have them put it into your bank or send a cheque out.

I've used Quidco loads, and they are great. Even when the transaction didn't log properly, they've still credited me the money.

If I remember correctly, the catch is you have to use a garage to keep up the service records, which is fine if you don't fancy doing the work yourself but on older cars it makes more economic sense to do servicing and repairs yourself rather than pay through the teeth at a garage.

However, if you can't do the work yourself, it's worth looking at.

Yeah, that's right Bob. They specifically say that your car isn't considered "maintained" if you do the work yourself, or get a neighbour to do it.

That said, they don't require you to use a main dealer though, just a proper garage.

It makes sense, they probably would get loads of claims arising as a result of home mechanic's bodged jobs 🙂

What car did you get in the end Peter? I didn't want to start up the 'yay or nay' thread again as it seemed to have gotten a bit ridiculous! Hope you're happy with whatever you went for in the end - enjoy!

Is this better cover than the warranties garages try and sell you on used cars? From what I've read they're generally worthless as they get out of paying most of the time based on it being a consumable or normal wear & tear etc. Even the big brand name policies (like the RAC one) are just rebranded ones from companies that screw you over so no more peace of mind.

I ended up with a 2004 Mercedes C180K Avantgarde estate.

It's in immaculate condition, with all the toys, a years MOT and full main dealer service history.

I've put a good few hundred miles on it around B roads in the Highlands in the last few days and I'm loving it 🙂

Test drove quite a few different cars on Friday and this was the best balance of all the things I wanted/needed.

Time will tell whether it's a cheap year or two of motoring, or if I've just bought a money pit though.

I think it's supposed to be better, and considerably cheaper. Have a google and read the threads on Pistonheads etc - it's all real world views, and the AA guys seem to be pretty good with claim handling.

Even if it's rubbish, I still technically haven't paid a single penny for it!

Great stuff - glad you're pleased with it! You've got yourself a quality motor there. Enjoy (but take it a bit easy hey?!)!

The AA one is top. Mate just had a load of work done on his golf worth just shy of a grand (it packed up in spectacular fashion)..

Oh don't worry, I am 🙂

I had a quick look on Honest John's website while I was sitting in the car after test driving it, and stumbled across a review of the same model. That was the final confirmation I needed W203 Road Test

The AA have an anti-bike, anti-public transport agenda and lobby govt. to that effect.

Be a cold day in hell before they get any of my money.

The worst bodge jobs I've seen done were from garages, the very worst from dealerships. I maintain all my own cars and wouldn't have it any other way!
