As the turning of the tide of shorter nights approaches, thoughts turn to fairer weather, Longer days, and bucket lists. So, with that in mind, what rides/events/adventures/goals are floating your boat for 2017?.
Events - I'm only really planning both of the Ard events, which are august and september, don't think I'm going to bother with any other enduro's tbh, but maybe something will catch my eye.
More Lakes exploring, I've really enjoyed getting away from well known routes and just picking stuff off the maps, never had a bad day yet, I'll have at least 3 or 4 Lakes weekends.
Couple of weekends further north too, one around Kintail to explore the Beinn Fhada loop, and some time with Captain Mainwaring around the Cairngorms too.
Started doing a bit more trailbuilding this year, planning to get some Macleod type tools made up and step that up a wee bit.
I'd also like to finally make the long journey down to Herts shore from SW Scotland for a day with Jedi, and tie it in with a visit to a mate in St Neotts, maybe even take wee nobeerette back to Harry Potter world.
Over to you...
I've already entered the Tour Of Flanders at the start of April which should keep me motivated to ride through February and March. Other than that, nowt. I rode over 6000 miles in 2015 and it will only be 4000 in 2016. So a nice middle 5000 for 2017 is probably a good target.
Rovaniemi 150
Lakeland Loop 200
Cairngorms Loop
Cambrian Trail
Borders 350
HT550
+ associated training
Since having married a Norfolk girl and ending up in the flatlands, i've spent too long riding on skinny tyres, fitness has increased and i've clocked up 8500 miles for the year, but i want to get more back more on knobbly tyres!
Entered the Dirty Reiver already and have pre-registerd for the French Divide, so need to clock more serious time on my Salsa Fargo.
Also looking at Capital Trail, Nice-Torino and Mount Blanc route.

Tis exactly why I moved away after 30yrs, there's some cheeky places to play but depends on where you are in Norfolk, it's a big place.
Plans for 2017:
Richmond 5 dales
Couple other 100+ mile sportives in the Dales/Peaks/Pennine area
More Lakes and Scotland MTB especially after reading that 2016 Mountain thread.
More riding on the north side of the M62 (Calderdale)
Run a marathon.
Ride a 100 mile on the road in under 5 hours.
Clock 5000 miles total.
Work to home (38 miles) in under 1 hour 50m.
Lose a stone. 1 down, 1 more to go.
Edit, and maybe a triathlon. I'm certainly debating it anyway.
LEL
Numerous C2Cs up and down the country which will involve much bikepacking.
A race around the NC500.
Same as Scud,Nice-Torino looks ace.
A day with Jedi
A weekend trip to a couple of Wales trail centres, not having been since the late 90s
Ride from home (Basingstoke) to my parents house in Lymington. 60ish miles - my biggest ride by far.
Lap of the IOW - better than a day mixing with my in laws...
Possibly a week in the Alps, depending on negotiations with my wife
More challenges, more fun, more travel, more overnighters, more photos.
Paris Roubaix sportive booked (full length)
Cambrian mountains and Brecons
Northumberland
SDW in a day
Quantocks
Exmoor
Local overnighters planned
'Snaps before Strava' - not worrying about overall mileage, avg speed, or segments, and taking the time to take photos whenever I want.
Taking a hip flask on touring/bikepacking trips
Finally go tubeless!
-More triathlons, specifically sprint, assuming that I can last the 10k run.
-More actual mountain biking on actual mountains (on actual mountain bikes), instead of little hills and the odd bit of 4x.
-C2C or something similar
-At least one good sportive each quarter.
Focusing on CX next year so much less XC racing for me next year, maybe 4 races tops. Going to not think about training till May, just ride for fun but with long base rides in mind.
A more road orientated year in store for me in 2017.
The main event of the year will be a 5-day NC500 with a charity group, however with the bulk of the group being new cyclists, there will be a fair few day rides and sportives with them to try and get them in shape and do some team building.
In addition:
I'm trying to work up the courage to enter DR200.
I'm hoping to do my first 200mi road ride.
Once I see my fatigue levels after NC500, i'll most likely do Relentless again either pair (if tired)/solo (if fresh and motivated).
I'll also be looking to fit in at least 3 rounds of SMBO as they are great fun.
Some xc, some longer races and events. Qualify as coach to help the club grow and diversify. More trips to fun places with my kids now they are getting more capable.
I have a half formed plan to sea kayak around the Isle of Mull.
I also plan to ride my bike
The White Roads Classic (deferred from this year due to injury)
The Wales Sportif aka the bike leg of the Tenby Long Course Weekend (munqe chick doing the whole thing)
3 weeks road riding in the Italian Dolomites (all the stuff we missed this year) and the Swiss Alps, hopefully timed to take in Stelvio Bike Day again*
Qualify for the '16-'17 season CX National Champs
Possibly throw in a 7000 mile goal, as I had 6000 as a goal this year and hit it in November (but left myself a bit too much work to hit 7000 this year!)
And maybe start riding my mountain bike again (not used since May)!
*and yes I know the Stelvio is in the Italian Alps so no need to call the #dolomitepolice
No events.
Apart from local XC series that is.
More weekends riding new (to me) trails: Shropshire, Scottish Borders, Wales.
Some longer XC outings, including Sheff to Mcr.
At least monthly long road ride over colder months for base fitness.
Probably a trip up to NW Scotland, rather than Europe.
Continue exploring not-quite-local trails, eg. Hebden, Pennines.
On the bike;
WHW in a day
Cairngorm Loops as an ITT
Working on my VeloViewer Explorer Square (currently 12x12)
Bivvy-a-month
Some islands (Inner Hebrides, Orkney/Shetland)
Off the bike;
more packrafting
more running (particularly off-road - VV Explorer might play a part)
Get the blog active again
Get the van converted to a campervan and make use of it!
I've taken ages to decide what I;'m doing next year, but I want to run an ultra, so that will be my focus.
jan to march good diet, no drink and lots of training running, cycling and gym, to run my first trail marathon at end of march.
from there build up to an ultra in july / august, I want to do 50 miles at least.
then, cross in the winter
Oh - my missus is doing at least one half-marathon. I might get roped in.
Me and the GF have just booked our flights Glasgow <> Denver for next years bike/road trip - will be including biking at Grand Junction, Moab, Sedona, Durango, Colorado Springs amongst other stuff....already counting the days.
I was thinking if this a few days ago.. My goals are:
200 miles (road) ride
Sdw on the SS
Complete all the brass monkey series SS...illness always gets me!
More bivvy trips - I haven't tramped it up for over a year ๐
DrP
Plus a secret one... To try and take podium again at big bike bash!!... :/
and some time with Captain Mainwaring around the CairngormsSee you then?
I think I'm probably 'going the other way' to most posters.
My New Year Resolution is to stop using Strava, Smiles an hour not Miles an Hour.
I've got a Skills Course at BPW to look forward to, or not, see BPW Voucher thread for details.
Make an effort to beat fear of drops.
Passportes in June (or is it July) but I'm not entering and won't ride the full course. (see point 1).
Maybe a Endruo race in Autumn, but only if I think it'll be fun.

Have you got a place already mate?
This is on my list if i can get a place, audax UK member so hoping i can get one in January.
Only thing booked is GT7 in May.
I will beat 7 laps this year!
Couple of places I've not been this year that I'll try and visit:
Fort William - scare myself on the DH track for a day
Arran - overdue a revisit
and teach my daughter how to ride her balance bike!
cool that you want to see me dudes.
my plans are smiles more than miles and to do tons of snowboarding too ๐
Spring 2007 only one route pencilled in so far, the what i consider to be the Ultimate loop in the northern Lakes, with the best descents, best outlook, best singletrack, best technical intrest! will be waiting for a fine settled day.
More weekends away and explore more. I appear to have got stuck in a loop of riding the same places and routes this year.
Way of the roses in a day
SDW in a day
Get an mtb as I don't have one anymore!
More weekends away and explore more. I appear to have got stuck in a loop of riding the same places and routes this year.
This has been the main disadvantage of moving to Aviemore....
Not going to see jedi as no doubt every day that gets booked will be wet so i can't get on the woodwork
More fun on bikes, a few local DH races with the chance of maybe possibly having a go at an enduro, bimbles out for curry and beer and to food festivals, few track days on me motorbike- that sort of thing. Business as usual really!
Id like to do the welsh 3000's in June time (started training for this), ride my first 100 miler, complete a 1/2 marathon and enter some more road and mtb events.
The biggest thing for me in 2017 is having Jun/Jul/Aug off work.It was either that or finish full stop..
April I'm entered for the Dirty Reiver
May I'm doing the Lakes Jennride
Jun either going for a few days to the Isle of Man TT or finally going to Fort william for the World Cup round.
July I'm doing a Trek around Mont Blanc
A few of us are planning a Bikepacking weekend on the MTL.
I'm thinking about doing the Cairngorm loop & also finally getting to Skye for some hiking.
I'm also thinking about doing the South Downs Way when I'm off work.I've been told to wait for a dry spell before doing it,I've 3 months off so it should be dry at some stage ๐
Entered the Ard Moors and will hopefully do a couple of other enduros. Also hoping to enter the Batch Burner for the 4th year in a row.
Some riding in the states as part of our holiday, a day or two at Moab and hopefully somewhere else as well.
Other than that, just carry on enjoying riding bikes, as 99.9% time I finish a ride with a smile on my face. Bikes are bloody brilliant ๐
Well, it appears that I've decided to try and do the bb bivy a month 'challenge' (although I'm counting the Highland Winter one as my starting point ๐ ).
Currently mulling over a Hogmanay bivy to really kick it off though!
The Cairngorm Loop I'm thinking will be feature as I'll probably split into two loops first before linking it altogether as an ITT.
I'm planning on tackling the HT550 route. I'll start off as an ITT and see how it goes but expect it will turn into a tour instead. Probably plan it for just after the main event hoping they'll have beaten a track to make it easier to follow....
The Deeside Trail is on the doorstep, probably pencil that in for late summer.
And I need to start commuting to work, just to get the miles in/help raise some semblance of fitness.... ๐ณ
๐ very good
BC Bike race
Cant get on the bike until June/July following a knee op. So counting down the days and hoping it's sorted.
Assuming it is... enter every local winter race late 2017 to remind myself what I've missed. Be happy at placing last as its better to be out than sat on the sofa, whatever the ride whatever the conditions.
Whilst off the bike might watch some British Downhill Series races if local, not done that since the 90s.
Might volunteer to Marshall local xc races but they probably won't want someone who can't run or walk well.
Study at the LSHTM and tell my company to do one...
After a couple of years getting the kids on track, I'm going to attempt a ride every Saturday. Lakes, dale, wales, peak.
2 stone to loose.
I said for 2016 I'd have a break from riding, I thought I'd miss it, I don't seem to be.
More surfing then.
Tom - Which course are you doing at LSHTM (London I assume)?
MSc virology for me way back when...
Toss up between Medical Paristology and Medical Microbiology, Control of Infectious Disease is a maybe - due to me not having enough developing world experience. That's the one I'd really like to do though, as I want to do something that is a bit of a mix up of public health and lab work. Paristology might get me out of the lab a bit as well and doing something fun in the developing world.
If I stay in an industrial lab, I'm going to get depressed and angry. Did you enjoy your time there?
