Need to get insurance sorted today for my new puppy, a 2 month old Lab.

    Who do you recommend? Thanks

We get fewer problems with Petplan. There’s a good reason why they are more expensive.

We actually signed up with John Lewis for our Westie.

We have had a really terrible 12 months with him which ultimately ended with him passing away earlier this year. John Lewis have been fantastic, offering advice on the claims (of which there have been numerous for thousands of pounds from different vets) and have paid out for absolutely everything without question or quibble. Even sent us a cheque for his purchase price which we had forgotten about and therefore didn’t request it (we donated that to a dog rescue charity).

We have now signed up with them again for a 4 month old Collie.

Take the money you’d pay and stick it in the bank to pay for future vet bills. At least that seems to be a better approach with anyone other than Pet Plan. And once you start with one insurance company never ever change to another one.

wife sorts all that malarkey out for young colin. we started with tesco but apparently their prices have nearly doubled over his 3 years. so shes just in the process of changing to argos apparently. who’d have thought they did pet insurance eh? 🙂

Well we were paying John Lewis £12 a month for our Westies insurance. We paid it for 9 months before he fell seriously ill. His vet bills came to £2700 in the end.

From a vet friend of mine, petplan lifetime cover is the only option worth having as it is a lifetime policy. Any annual policy pays for operations or accidents but a chronic issue gets called an existing condition at renewal time so will not be covered the next year. The renewal also goes up massively due to you having claimed.

If you’re going to do it, do it properly otherwise as mentioned above come renewal time it’ll be an existing condition and will be uninsurable.

    Pet plan or self insure!

We used Healthy Pets for our collie, who we had to have put to sleep last month.

We were with them from the off, with lifetime cover (similar to PetPlan, but cheaper). Every year for the last five years we have had to claim for the same condition, and they paid out without fail (directly to the vets so we didn’t have to pay up front and claim it back).

We had the gold cover that had a limit of £7500 per condition for life, and we only had to pay the excess once in those five years. I would recommend getting a quote from them.

2 weeks after we got Rosie, she broke her leg. At that point, we didn’t have £2500 in a savings pot to pay for it, but luckily she had a Petplan freebee , when we got her. She now has a Petplan policy.
