After i built my first bike over the summer, i decided what i also needed was something a bit more road friendly with skinny tyres as my mountain bike was just not a great ride on the tarmac.

So, I’ve been putting together a new bike over the last couple of months.

its built around an old steel Kona frame with sliding dropouts to allow me the SS option.
    White Brothers carbon forks
Halo freedom 29er wheels and 28mm tyres

Its not quite finished (no front mech) but took some pictures of it outside today i think its turned out quite nice really.

Not even been for a ride on it yet – but hopefully this weekend should see its first outing.

Pictures below – and yes the fence does need fixing/painting

    Nice. Is it a 26″ wheel frame/forks ?

    Looks, Quick !.
    🙂

For very similar reasons I placed my HT on Urban run about duties, where its been for a couple of years.
I was running traditional 26″ rims with schwalbe marathon racers.
The tyres were very good, for mtb on tarmac, imo.

But eventually I wanted something lighter and faster.
So am currently in the final phase of a more road centric build.

Planet X Uncle john frame, 700c wheels with hydraulic disc brakes, flat bars.
Should be good for the summer.

I hope you like your new ride.

Loving it, thinking of a similar build myself, but having a spare set of wheels with MTB tyres that I can quickly swap. What tyres are you using, I’m using schwable marathon plus at the mo bit on the heavy side.

Thanks for not commenting on the fence 🙂

The frame is a 2004/5 lavadome – which i think is the only year it came with the sliding dropouts like the explosif and unit.

Its an 18inch frame for normal 26″ wheels but obviously the 29er (700c) wheels fit with lots of clearance if using skinny tyres.

The forks are also 26″ wheel specific

@luminous – would love to see some pics of the uncle john flat bar ride

The pretty coloured rotor bolts were off the bay – just checked and the seller no longer has them but there are others on there.

@rocketdog – you are right. Posting a half baked bike is not on. I beg forgiveness and will of course spank myself until all thoughts of going off at half-cock are banished for good.

Nice, but the gears ruin it.
