  • Montane Prism jacket- before I pull the trigger, anything else?

Is there anything else that I should consider?

I’ve got a Montane Dyno for riding it (I like it)- its not for riding duties, its keep in the boot of the car, throw on when loading bike/unloading, walking down to shop at night to buy more beer, out and about etc etc.

The Rab Photon just looks like a bin bag to me.

Ideally down to -5ish with a fleece underneath and will last years. (I have a Mammut softshell thats getting on 10yrs old and still mint) 😀

I’ve had a Prism for a couple of years now.

    Love it, great jacket.

Prisms are great for the price, I’ve got one as my insulated jacket and if I lost it I’d buy another.

Mate has a Mountain Equipment Bastion, also very nice – looks slightly smarter, I perceive it to be a touch warmer but it’s a lot more expensive and doesn’t stuff quite so small.

Im too much of a mtn equipment whore. Saying thay my stuff-bag and sleeping bags etc are all pre buyout mtn equipment.

Everyone says prism prism. No brainer 😀

The ME Compressor is a bit flimsy. The Bastion is a thing of beauty, but expensive.

Prism great if it fits, and they’re always on offer somewhere so no harm in trying.

My montane dyno (XL) has a very baggy front. Weird as Im 6ft2 and almost 100kg’s of fat. Tempted to try the Prism in large but then I’d lose the wiggle room for layering?

Prisms are ace, Mrs oab has lived in hers for a couple of years. Having said that, I just bought a hooded ME Compressor for £68 in a nice green colour for her for Christmas….

A mate who runs an outdoor shop that sells all the main technical brands told me to look at the high end Berghaus jackets this season.

When I suggested that I might get a Rab or Montane insulated jacket he suggested looking elsewhere. His view was that Gooutdoors have turned Rab into the equivalent of North Face (basically it’s becoming a fashion brand worn by the masses) and the the quality of Rab is nowhere near what it was a few years ago.

In my own experience Montane sizing can be very strange.

Can’t say I agree with that. Bought a couple of Rab tops this year and they’re both excellent. TNF still knocks out some excellent kit e.g. their GTX jackets are as good as anyone’s. I’d have never rated Berghaus as a ‘high end’ brand, more middle of the road hill walker stuff. Although their Yeti gaiters are excellent, still have two pair going after 20 odd years and many re-soles.

decathlon innuit range……I bought a down coat like the nano stylee £30 in sale in summer as good as other brands and better warmth than my prism, they had primaloft equivalents and they looked ideal unsure of price but usually good quality for 4 seasons.

The Prism isn’t designed for max warmth, it’s got quite thin insulation (40g). It’s more a high activity mid layer.

I’ve just bought a Prism jacket and am really happy with it, I also have various other TNF and RAB jackets of varying thickness/materials which are also great

Personally I would avoid negative comments from shops, they always knock brands they don’t like or can’t get correct mangins on. They’re all same whether selling coats, bikes or caravans

Apart from some winter mountain tops, I am yet to see the need for the legions of full phat down monster jackets many seem to wear.
I have done winter camps and bothies with theses ‘not that warm’ jackets – the rest of my layers also need to be factored in.

Yes, but they also do Rab, Haglofs, North Face, Norrona, Monntain Equipment, Montane, Mammut, Columbia, Arcteryx.

His view is people still look at Rab and think of their jackets of 10 years ago and they simply are no longer as tough and the quality is not the same. The number of people outside the school gate now wearing Rab supports his idea that it is becoming the new NF.

In terms of Berghaus he is not talking about the mainstream items sold everywhere but the technical items you can only get from specialist outlets.

I got a Prism for £60 quid through the double whammy of the Go Outdoors price promise and their salesman not being able to calculate 10%

Just been into gooutdoors. Large fits my body perfect but tight around shoulders/back. XL fits shoulders but bloody big on ftont. All in a tshirt. Exactly like my Dyno ffs

    Nooooooooooo!

The Large Prism will be too small for you; I had one and sent it back for an XL as it was too short in the arms – I now have two in different colours. We’re pretty much the same size, perhaps you’re a tad larger.

I’ve tried skiing in a Rab Generator (very similar to the Prism) and it was too thin. We tend to go to high resorts in January, so it’s not the warmest of places unless the sun is out. Hence I normally ski in a Down jacket over a thermal or a thicker insulated jacket.

The mate I referred to earlier and his brother in law both have them. Cracking jackets – light and surprisingly warm for their weight and lack of bulk.

Very happy with my Prism but I might not be if I’d paid full whack. Got mine online for around £55. Sizing is baggy but short. Best thing is it’s great for hiking in when it’s cold – always keeps me exactly the right temperature. Not so good for sitting around in very cold conditions.

I have a Prism, i love it, good little jacket warm enough, keeps a shower off and packs down to nowt. I have a Medium one. I also have a Medium Dyno but this feels a little tight compared to the Medium Prism. I’m not that impressed personally with the Dyno.

I have a Berghaus Furnace but the one without hydrophobic down, its a few years old now

I have a Montane Fireball Smock (amongst lots of other primaloft tops), its 40g fill as well and whilst light and compact its not the warmest thing in the world. The Prism is the same fill but its a jacket but with a hood. I’m surprised by the amount of use they get considering the lack of warmth. Its probably somewhere between a 100wt and 200wt fleece in terms of warmth

I guess if its for biking then it potentially its freezing, just cold

My main top when wildcamping or out for prolonged periods is a Berghaus Ignite jacket, which is 60g fill, I often combine this with a down vest for extra warmth
