[Closed] MODS: Can you fix the "new page glitch" please?

Is there any chance that someone could have a look at the code and fix the silly fence post error that means posts that create a new page get "lost" until someone else posts.

We've had this bug for years now.

I know it is part of the forum's "character" but it's getting a little tiresome.

The 40th post bug? Well use to be about that. I think they tried once and didn't work, from what I gather it's buried deep in the code. I'll raise this thread.

We've had this bug for years now.
I know it is part of the forum's "character" but it's getting a little tiresome.
And 12.5% worse since the change to only 35 posts per page.

Aye i think you need three post to see it once over a certain size - can you not add bumpty glitch posts when someone does a new page to save time?
Does it show I know nothing about computers?

Really, send me "teh codez" and I'll fix it. For free.

Wild conjecture: I bet somewhere in the code it does a divide instead of a modulus. Or vice versa.

It doesn't always happen though, does it? Are there specific conditions which need to be met?

lol.

it's where posts have been deleted from a thread but presumably somewhere they're not taken off a post count figure which is used to determine the pages or which posts appear on a page.

Are there that many posts deleted (given that only Mods can do so)? If so, it would be better if they were simply "blanked" and left in situ.

Yeah, but then we would know the 'invisible hand' had been at work.

Nah don't think it is deleted posts. The iPhone 5 has had multiple glitchy bumps and I've not been aware of any posts being deleted on it.

Got a bloke in my office that says that all the time too 😉

It's not deleted posts btw. It's when threads get to a certain size (over 3 pages?) the first post on a page doesn't show. Click the
"Latest reply from patricksingletrack" latest reply link and it doesn't move.
Another post or 2 will get things moving again.
Of course there's a manual solution, but why should there be?!

What's perhaps most annoying is that it manifests itself most in the bigger, fast moving discussion threads! (Like the rugby and ski/snowboard ones, for example). These are often the best threads here!

Hance my questioning of the "deleted posts" cause. Does discussion of skiing and snowboarding require a lot of Moderator intervention? I can only think that there might be some spam being removed?

Druidh, I think the two examples I gave are two of the finest where there's "self-moderation" from all involved. A refreshing lack of anything that needs to be modded! Not seen spam on either, either.

Here's an idea, how about we all employ some SERIOUS swearing every time the glitch pops up. I mean, getting really, nastily offensive. Then, when it's reported and the inevitable warning from teh modz arrives simply say, "Fix it. Can't ban me for that."

😉

To keep this thread near the top I suggest putting a link on here when there is a glitch on a thread and a link to this thread on the glitch thread.

Open a thread that only you can access.
Keep posting until your last post doesn't appear.
Then post again - both posts will magically appear on page 2 at the same time.

Is this what you meant?

Of course, it's more frequent since the number of posts per page was reduced from 40 to 35. Was there a technical reason for doing that or a marketing one?

Eh? The forum is prettier with fewer posts per page? I thought it might have been to do with serving up less data per page (performance improvement) or ensuring more page requests (advertising revenue improvement).

It might (or might not) be helpful but,

When it glitches, the missing next page's URL works when typed manually.

Eg, if this post was the one to roll to the next page and thus be affected, then I'd still see "Pages: « Previous 1 2 [3]" at the bottom of this page and similar on the forum contents page, whilst my first post of page 4 disappeared off into the ether. BUT, typing http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/mods-can-you-fix-the-new-page-glitch-please/page/4 into the address bar would correctly display the missing page.

Sort of.

Except the page 4 wouldn't have a reply box, so you have to go back to page 3 to bump the post.

Tom: watch the Ski and Snowboard thread - it is a nice long thread and the bug now happens every time we get to a new page on that one.

Edit: as I_Ache just said 😳

Good guess, and not far off - there are/were no deleted posts in the affected threads I've looked at. However a count was off for another reason. Both the threads mentioned above should be back to OK. I'll check for others in the near future.
