I currently have 2.35 High Rollers (Maxpro single ply 60a) front and rear on my Trek Fuel ex.

I'm happy except I'v just lost my 4th inner tube to the front tyre creeping on the rim and ripping out the valve. I've tried talc but my conclusion is that the bead is to loose (they go on or off easily by hand)

So I think I need new tyres. Ideally cheap or certainly not more than £25 per end.

The High Rollers were fine for me, although probably over kill at the back. I'm just reluctant to replace like with like when currently what I have is eating tubes....

I've thought about cheap Nobby Nics evo from on-one but people moan about side walls.

Are Kenda 2.1 about the sam size as 2.35 High Rollers?

Are the newer Maxxis Advantage/Crossmax likely to have tighter beads?

I've used Kenda SB8s and Nevegals, although they're good tyres they really aren't in the same league as a High Roller.

Maybe swapping to a steel bead might ensure a tighter fit on the rim? Will be cheaper too.

I'd not use kenda nevergrips again personally, high rollers have so much grip in comparison.

Deciding that Maxxis don't work on your rims kind blows a nuclear hole in the options really dosn't it

Rampage look like a reasonable copy.....

Bontrager xr4 are a decent tyre, good size too and can be had for good money.

I swap between Nevegals and Highrollers, tbh there's fairly little in it when you compare like with like. The Highroller's better when pushed hard, the Nevegal's better when not. For me that means most of the time I prefer the Nevegal- on unfamiliar trails or long rides, I just don't get the best out of the HR often enough. But ymmv.

What I mean by "like for like", by the way- my 2.5 HR is the same size as my 2.35 nevegals and is much grippier, but then it's also massively more draggy and weighs almost exactly twice as much. I wouldn't go XC riding on it! The 2.35 HR is a more direct competitor but is so undersized, it loses its advantage. IMO of course but I've had better service from nevegals than 2.35 highrollers.

Kenda 2.1 is about the same size as your 2.35 but you'll feel a big loss of grip if you go down to a 2.1 Nevegal stick-e.

I've a feeling the solution is none of the above though. If I was you I'd consider trying an aftermarket spec Highroller or Minion, if you like them, the folding ones are no slacker on my rims than any other tyre.

these are after market Highrollers.

At the moment I think I'll swap the original Jones XR back on. I'm off to the 7 Stanes next week, but hopefully I'll be riding with kids (11, 12 and 14) so the pace shouldn't be too challenging. Also trail centres seem fairly tollerant of a range of tyres. When I get back I'll work on a longer term solution

But on the other hand I currently see the worlds as a desert but thats not going to be true in Scotland

Northwind its interesting that you say the 2.35 HighRoller has no direct equvalant in Nevegals

I've used quite a few of these tyres in the past, however I am now running Specialized S-Works Folding tyres I have to say they are brilliant! I have a Sauserwind on the front and a fast trak on the back, they have single handedly made my bike a whole bunch quicker on the trail

im using a pair of sb8's at the mo and find them superb other than that i found maxxis ignitors to be great.
