I have a Charge Scoop on my bike. On long rides my bum gets achy and then numb. I ride once or twice a week for at least 2 hrs each time so it’s not simply a case of my plinth needing to toughen up. I appreciate that no two arses are exactly the same – apart from GW and helpful1 – but would be interested to know what saddles any, err, stockier gents are using. Not those ridiculous comfort saddles though 🙂

WTB Volt. But I also find that a good chamois makes an enormous difference. And by ‘good’ I mean ‘plentiful’.

Good to see that the WTB ones, or at least the Volt, come in different widths. What’s the difference between the Volt and Rocket?

Spoon fits my bill

i use a charge spoon, its fine.
a cannondale generic saddle, its fine.
2x different cube generic saddles, they’re fine.
some type of selle italia, its fine.
i dont ride that many miles, and i rarely use cycling shorts.
i wouldnt have said my arse was all that tough tbh.

A cheap Madison thing on the road bike.
The Fizik is probably the least comfy but maybe that’s cos it’s old.

I have a charge scoop that I don’t get along with. As you said after an hour or so it’s awful. My old bike had a SDG Belair that I liked so I better get one order I think.

Anyone tried the Specialized Henge?

On One Big Nose here. Tried the Charge Spoon but didn’t get on with it.
Specialised saddles are very good if your starting off. Bit extra padding but not uncomfy.

I’m not a lard arse in any sense of the word, but an ISM Peak – one of those special funky ‘sit on your sitbones’ saddles, but MTB orientated.

SDG Grand Prix for a while, no longer available but well padded, mid width and still doing service on the folder. Flirted with Bel Airs but they were not wide enough for my backside and I had to accept they were not for me and put them on ebay. Finally realised I had wide spaced sitbones and went hunting wide saddles.

Henge gets rave reviews but all seem to be for previous model with more padding. I found current model, although wide enough, was not comfortable if used for more than an hour. Ergon saddle had a sweet spot. If you were on it (25% of any journey) it was really comfortable, if you were off it (75%, of any journey) it was excruciating. 2 more happy buyers on ebay though.

Wide WTB Rocket V seems the best for me. Shaped like a wider Bel Air and available at a range of prices depending on model. Honourable mention for Terry Figura Max Gel which is to racing saddles what an armchair is to a wooden stool and does sterling service on the 29+. Needed to play to get it angled right and front is wide enough to remind you that it is there.

I use the Specialized romin with almost zero padding and wear a decent set of bibs under my baggies and is the most comfortable set up I have managed to find.

Bel-air here, but I have buckled a couple of them :lol:.
Also used Cube and Madison Flux saddles.

Chromag Juniper – it’s actually a ladies saddle but it’s the most comfortable I’ve found. Older ones very subtle black but newer ones are a bit more colourful.

Excellent for all day rides with decent chamois as others have said. Suits me perfectly so I track down replacements (new old stock) on Ebay. I currently have two on bikes and two spares.

I’ve also enjoyed the On-One Big Nose that came on a 45650b i ordered a few years ago, very comfy….still have it under the stairs as emergency backup.

I’ve been both skinny and, er, chunky as a cyclist and I don’t see that that has any relevance on saddle choice – what worked skinny worked fine when not and visa versa.

My usual recommendation is to try some of the right sized (which also has no link to weight) Spesh saddles.

Charge Knife Ti here (definitely fit the lard arse bill) and no problems. Also have a Madison Flux on my gravel bike and happily out all day with no arse issues. Legs and belly issues but not the posterior..

if you’re struggling with comfort, the ISM ones are worth a look, and are available for pre-purchase trails from a few shops

Well I found an old tatty Bel Air in the garage so put that on today, and it felt better than the Scoop, albeit possibly a bit narrow, although that was only a few hours. I always wear padded shorts so that’s already in place. I think I might measure my arse and have a look at the WTB ones which are available in three widths. The WTB website seems a little indecisive about what their various saddles are designed for. The Volt looks to be flatter than the Rocket, but I can’t work out if it is also less padded? If anyone knows?

I hate Charge saddles – I have the Spoon and Knife and just don’t get on with them. I find the back of them is too wide.

My favourite saddle is the SDG I / Ti Fly. These are on all of my MTB’s. They look quite narrow and racey but I think they’re super comfy.

ragley cheeky, which is the Velo 1200, I prefer it because it doesn’t slop in the middle (tried the spoon but didn’t work for me)

Fat arse here – fits well on a Charge Spoon.
It’ll be the first thing I change when I get my new bike at the end of the month..

Still want to try that USE Seatpost? It took me a while to find it (and as a result my garage is a good bit tidier 🙂 )

The Ti Spoon is just far more compliant. Can’t explain it. I’ve got the Ti one on my CX bike, chromo on my MTB. Tried swapping them around and the comfort follows the saddle.
