I thought the claim was they were the fastest a-b car on the road rather than just top speed.
It was, as explained above, down to their handling, acceloration and top speed that they could just about mash anything else on the road.
sierra xr8 does 144mph - we might have a winner
What about the 5 door Ford Granada - wasn't there a Cosworth engined one of those before they went to the fugly Scorpio body style??
140mph
I think you've done it. 5 doors, 206bhp, and as far as I can find so far 150+ mph, probably due to good aerodynamics......

EDIT
Grandad trumps Jellymould XR8....
granada cosworth was 1990, from what I can see?
309 is a 138 mph top speed. I can't find info on the amg's of the time
Sorry i was slightly off is a 2.8
http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/62601/vauxhall_vectra_vxr.html
161mph on the evo test
And i'll raise you a Holden r300
http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/37416/lsv_holden_r300.html
171mph
Dunno what it topped out at, but must be close. 1981 Ladbroke Avon XJ V12. There are more modern versions around too, later XKs and the like.
Speshpaul, read the thread! According to Wiki it was only the 16V and evo versions of the Delta that could crack 140mph, on sale between 1989 to 1993, so the granny was faster!
stu - the granny cossie wasn't out in 1989 so doesn't cut it - sorry!
the jag estate is possible - was it a production car though?
When did Volvo start making those ridiculous 850 T5 estates?
They were good for 140+
i know its been said but im sure merc did a cosworth thing and that was rapido
2.5 mercedes evolution II 155mph
'95, I think, Nick. The lovely/mad/absurd custard yellow T5Rs were ace!
As late as that? blimey, memory's not what is was...
190E 2.3 16? - 4 door saloon I'm afraid
the merc evolution was 4 door only
lad in the office just found this
http://hubpages.com/hub/Volkswagen_Golf_G60_Limited_Edition
g60 limited edition - very limited, but 5 door
I think the Merc 190E was a 4 door only
I NEED that G60. NOW!
I would fight you for the Golf!

I was thinking Golf G60, but they are only 3 door, and not fast enough either........
Not true. There is the Rallye - three door 8v supercharged rally special. They also - available in LHD only - produced a mk2 five door 16v supercharged car. It had wider plastic wheel arch trims and 4wd (syncro) but looked just like a 16v GTi. Had 215bhp irrc and topped out at near 150mph. Was built 89 onwards (again iirc).
ETA: Beaten to it!!
Then there was the Vauxhall mk2 Astra 16v which topped out the wrong side of 150mph. Not sure if it was available in five door though.
309 gti 16v was listed at 143 in the books but if you were prepared to wring it's neck out it would crack 150 easy enough, mi16 was a screamer of a lump.
Did have a 220hp na mi16, all gone now though sniff.

Ashamed to say it but...
Citroen BX 4TC
Group B rally car to rival Pug 205T16, but 5 door body
MK II Golf GTi G60 Blue Edition - 160bhp made from 1989 with 3 and 5 doors. Had a pic of one of these on my bedroom wall when I was a kid.
(Almost hate to say it but...) the Honda Civic Areodeck (estate!) managed 144mph ...
Shit, spent ages looking for a photo of a 5 door version and was beaten to it.
the bx 4tc is awesome

but the non-evo version (which was sold) looks like 220km/h (137mph) top speed - close but no cigar
I think the audi 200 quattro estate or the 307 (if quick enough) is the best bet. the civic aerodeck is far too new
or...
Saab 9000 Turbo 16 - should tick the 5 door box - and 141mph I believe
Ahh, Lancia Delta's. Lovely cars, came complete with a rust kit. A mate who part owned a hifi shop did all the car audio fitting, said that he had to clean the rust off the steel under the paint when fitting aerials. Never forget one leg of the RAC Rally coming along the, then, A350 across the top of my road. One of the Lancias came past, making an amazing noise. Then it got out of the 30 limit about half a mile away. I could hear the thing wailing like a banshee for several minutes, so he must have been near Lacock, four miles away. Insane.
Come on lads and lassie's thought you knew your cars.
MEGA FAST CAR EVEN BY TODAYS STANDARD.
Had a good go in one of these 10 years ago.
RS2 could run from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour (62.1 mph) in 4.8 seconds, and achieve a maximum speed of 262 km/h (162.8 mph) electronically restricted)
![]()
I thought of the RS2 but it was made in the 90's there was also the 405 t16 which had 210bhp plus and extra 20 on over boost and 4 wheel drive looked just like and mi16 except for 16 alloys.
Renault 21 Turbo - 141 mph
I think that around that era (and if by fastest you mean top speed, rather than acceleration) then it's probably a toss up between the Alpina B10 BiTurbo, Mercedes E500 or a Lotus Carlton. Certainly not the Lancia anyway
Not really a production car but... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-aC5B348rA&feature=PlayList&p=91A1DD78BF4105F1&index=14&playnext=2&playnext_from=PL
RS6 estate plus!
174mph
