We are heading to a world of excessive censorship. Always been a fan of John, ever since his book taught me how to pull apart my 1993 Marin Palisades.
He also explained that the comment about him being shot caused particular upset, because as a former Grenadier Guard, who served in Northern Ireland, he had been involved in an operation during which one of his friends had been murdered by an IRA sniper....
โMy friend Danny Blinco was shot dead in street by the IRA in an operation I was involved in.
โI have reported from some of the most dangerous places in the world including Baghdad and Basra, yet this is the first time in my journalistic career that I have genuinely been in fear over something I have written.
โI just hope some cycling campaigner doesn't decide to hit me over the head with a metal bar in the next few days
"victim" is a fanny.
Efforts were made to contact Mr Stevenson to request that the comments be removed. When Mr Stevenson ignored these, and instead published further provocative tweets in response, Mr Critchlow decided to contact the police.
Stevenson was daft.
Grown men acting like children.
Really! How is it even a death threat? Where in the tweet does he say "I am going to kill you"? Some people need to get a life FFS
Reminds me of the Twitter Joke Trial. Please let sense quickly prevail.
Well, hello, Neil deGrasse Tyson. My favourite astrophysicist.
"victim" is a fanny.
Stevenson was daft
and al's (been) a lawyer (is/hasn't he), so this is FACT
Telegraph should check their own editorial:
http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/tag/taken-out-and-shot/
For at least the last fifty years "they should be taken out and shot," has been a socially acceptable, perfectly unexceptionable way of expressing colourfully and vehemently one's distaste towards a particular category of unpleasantness, be it striking Unison workers, revolting students, poorly performing members of your football team or the Lib Dem members of Cameron's cabinet. Context is all.

Telegraph, one step up from the Fail.
cynic - not even. It just has longer paragraphs and posher tottie but underneath its the same rhetoric.
Was a good paper once and useful to counteract the rasher gruniad editorials. Without this balance the guardian is last man standing as the only mildly intelligent broadsheet and a monopoly does nobody any favours

I know you are but what am I ?
TBF everyone on here gets massively het up when an anti-cycling commentator says something similar.

Agreed.
There are many on the pro-cycling side of things who are insanely blinkered. Look at coverage of the New Forest for more. OK, so they're spending cycling money on car parks, but as most people drive in to the Forest to then go riding, where's the harm? There's an element of partisan, quasi-militancy that could go against the need to portray cycling as a good, simple thing.
That's very good flashy but maybe a bit too subtle - it's almost like you mean that, on first reading ๐ ๐
Shame. I've admired his writing for some time - about 25 years I think... Stupid thing for him to have done. The other guy seems to be milking it though.
The telegraph really is the arse end of the world.
It's bad alright but not as bad as the DM...
Mr Critchlow needs to strap a dick on.
From the original article
From what I observe, a fatal combination of poor riding skills, a complete disregard for the Highway Code, and the temptation of turning a gentle ride to work across Battersea Bridge into the final stage of the Tour de France, are just as equally to blame for the number of accidents on Britainโs roads as careless drivers.
Clearly Mr Critchlow's observation skills aren't very good, which is presumably why he thought he saw a death threat which wasn't actually there.
TBF, if Clarkson had tweeted for people to go out and shoot a cyclist, this place would have ****ing exploded!
๐
Yeah, but I used to quite like John Stevenson.

Indeed. My thoughts exactly. Predictability is a good thing...

And it seems to be contagious.
Some drivers drive badly, some cyclists ride badly and some pedestrians take risks. Had to sound car horn on commute home last night as a middle aged couple ran across right in front of me..... :?.
