Well there was never any doubt that Murdoch had politicians in his pocket, but I am genuinely surprised that he appears to have had quite a few coppers in his pocket too.

I can understand the old bill leaving him alone because politicians have leaned on senior officers, but I can’t understand the corrupt ones which took money. It’s a pretty risky business being a bent copper – you lose your job and get jailed in a very hostile environment if caught.

Apparently payments by News International to coppers started with £200 to “spin a numberplate”, why would any copper bother doing that for 200 quid ? They get a good wage and 200 quid is hardly likely to change their lifestyle.

I don’t understand why an old guy still actively trying to accumulate wealth.

I mean what does he want? World domination? How long can he live? Can he bring his wealth to the departed world?

I really don’t understand why old people do what they do … keep accumulating wealth even when they are already billionaires or multi millionaires whose time is ticking.

Thought he was only 80, everyone’s going to live to 150 nowadays donchanow! He has the money to pay for care in his old age.

It’s about power and an addiction to “expanding” chewkw, it has nothing to do with needing more money. And Murdoch should be stopped from expanding for those very reasons, ie, he only wants to for the increased power. No unelected and unaccountable person should have that much power.

Although to be fair there is probably also an element of doing it to pass on a thriving media empire to his children,

it’s always been a bad idea, still is a bad idea: always will be a bad Idea that one man (company) owns a variety of media outputs in one country and is able to even consider attempting to gain more media outputs (or a major stake any).

A Murdoch family biographer on Newsnight last night was speculating that Newscorp would be Murdoch-free in the next few years after this debacle. I wonder if James will be so bold when his pappy’s not there to look after him.
The internet/social media is making papers much less powerful anyway so their influence is already waning and will continue to do so.
I’d love to be a fly on the wall listening to Dave, Miliband, Brown et al working out how to play this publically whilst between them plotting to bring him down…

I think it’s likely that the payment is desultory. The individuals may have been placed in a compromising position by news international after other things about them were uncovered and they were threatened with this information going back to their families, their bosses and/or criminals. That’s how I’d run it. One they take money it’s not blackmail, even if that’s how it starts.

I think that the Sky buyout should be allowed to go through, on the proviso that Murdoch and Brooks are both drowned in their own faeces. We’ve been drowing in theirs for years…

I love the way that Vince Cable was demoted for saying he would do anything to stop Murdoch getting control of Sky, but now everybody’s jumping on his bandwagon.

What it confirms to me is:

Phone hacking celebs and other public figures == ok
Phone hacking people the public feel sorry for == bad
Politicians jumping on public outrage for “non party political” party politics and gunning for someone who was ok for most of them in the past.
They may not be affraid of the murdoch press now but they are right scared of the rest of the press!

A scenario: Having bought back 5bill-worth of shares in his own company to steady the markets and ignoring the call to attend a Parliamentary Comittee, Murdoch will now wait, then get on the good side of the Competition Comission by dumping all his UK paper interests (worth Millions), finally getting the green light to get his hands on BSkyB. (worth billions).
