One of my earliest memories (i think i was 3 or 4, definitely before school started) is my mum taking me to see the Postman Pat musical and being scared so completely witless we had to leave. I have no recollection of what exactly it was that scared me so badly though.

cows. Most specifically a troupe of morris dancers in the cotswolds where one bloke was dressed up with some sort of cow's head thing on, hitting me on the head with an udder-like inflated rubber glove on the end of a stick.

and bangs. At christmas my dad used to gently extract all the snaps from crackers and then he and my sister would pull them all in the other room.

I fear bears – rightly so though, they're mean sods and fast as a race horse (which I am not) and can climb trees, and have wolverine'esq claws.

Brant, you'll be avoiding this site then:

not sure if it was irrational but biggest fear was threat of pending nuclear war which seemed to hang over us with public information films about taking your doors off and leaning them against a wall to create a shelter etc. Even childrens author Raymond Briggs was covering it in When the Wind Blows.

Mushrooms – we used to collect them in the forest and if there was one close by I was always the one to find them due to my obsessive fear. I think it was the presence of maggots in them that freaked me out more than anything.

Also balloons that had gone old and wrinkly were absolutley terrifying!

I was scared of black* people as a child.

Not that I am racialist like, but I would scream and scream when I saw someone darker than I was used to seeing.

*Or whatever the PC term is nowadays.

my mum thought i was a reincarnation of hitler as i was scared of black people and liked blondes and used to hum the german national anthem at the age of 3 without them knowing where i might have heard it before.

Only throwback i have to that time now is my love of VW beetles.
