Just saw this linked to from a Whitelines Mag email and it's incredible. both the mechanics and the flying. Real Star Wars stuff.

Thought it worth sharing - just think of the applications. Good and bad!

Seems too fast to me, also you'd have to be an extra ordinary pilot to avoid getting disorientated with the direction and orientation of the drone at those speeds/maneuvers

In terms of bad uses a drone was downed recently in the US (I think) trying to smuggle cocaine !

would have been more impressive if they didn't speed up the video ridiculously.

I could hear a drone. Did remind me I need to clean my computer screen.

I'm not sure it is speeded up - I've seen conventional 3D model helicopters being flown that fast, and they need servos and mechanical linkages. Quads just need speed controllers.

Quite into this after I got a little toy quadcopter for Christmas.
The First Person View (FPV) quad racing looks great fun.

What did you get? My brother got me a Syma one for christmas too so if you see one whizzing round the cricket pitch, getting stuck in trees, that'll be me.

A Syma X7. It's pretty basic but good fun. Only flown it about the living room so far, been way too windy on my days off to take it outside. Sounds like we need a duel at the cricket pitch sometime soon ๐Ÿ˜€

I think you'll outmanoeuvre me, mine's an X5C. I think I need to get the hang of turning corners properly before a duel would be anything other than a competition to see who could retrieve it from the allotments the fastest but it'd be fun to give it a go!

Yup, it flies much better without it though. It's fun to fly it up and see how high you can get though...

Do you need a public surveillance license if you have a camera mounted on one?

Stick an LED Light on and fly it like that somewhere above Wiltshire, and you'd have all the UFO and crop circle freaks blowing their wad ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Only if you're a public body, RIPA doesn't apply to private individuals (which is not to say there's no other legislation applicable).

I hope you've all read these and complying with the rules?

http://nats.aero/blog/2014/11/guidance-safe-use-drones-uk-airspace/

Even a little drone has the potential to cause a serious incident and some people are doing some really dumb things with them.

It's just a quadcopter isn't it, not a drone... Powerful motors and powerful lipo's.

Slightly easier to watch, due to size, have a look for "rc Helicopter tricks " videos on YouTube. Just insane.

That drone racing through the trees looks great fun. If this sort of tech continues soon I'll be able to put on some glasses and virtually go down the trails in my local woods without leaving my bed, no getting wet, cold or spending 2 hours cleaning the bike.

Yeah you're right. The terms are getting very conflated these days though.

I guess it reflects that the boundaries between the two are getting blurred by quads that have semi-autonomous modes and lots of assists on them making them a bit drone-ish, while conversely some drones are regularly flown manually just as quads.

That and people just don't distinguish.

Good luck smuggling anything with my quad, a battery only lasts 11 minutes!
F450 frame, 920kv motors, 2.2 batteries and a kk flight controller.

My quad cost about 150 all in plus 35 for a good lipo charger. I think fpv kit would be about another 100 on top of that for a cheap setup.

disorientated with the direction and orientation of the drone at those speeds

These don't even have engines and do 400 mph 8)

Referring to them constantly as drones really boils my piss. However, I was of the understanding that it's generally accepted that if it has a camera attached it's a drone. If not its a hex/quad/tri-copter.

My understanding that you can call pretty much anything that doesn't have a pilot on board a drone.

The "proper" definition is that it is a drone if it is capable of autonomous flight.

i.e. something like a Phantom where you can take a map, put a bunch of waypoints on it, then press "Go" and it will take off, fly to each waypoint and then return home and land without you needing to touch the flight controls.

But some of the expensive quads have assists that make them semi-autonomous i.e. Some can use GPS, sonics, gyros and accelerometers to accurately hold position when you let go of the controls. Others can auto and.

Let's be honest though, what's important is that quadropter is a bit of a rubbish word and drone is a cool word.

Yeah, quadcopter sounds like you're playing with a kid's R/C toy.
Drone sounds like you're some kind of special agent in control of some wonderful hi-tech Bond style gadget.

Not exactly racing but I've managed to fly mine around the indoor BMX track at Manchester Velodrome a few times, at one point I was good enough to get it following the berms and jumps. It'd take me a bit of practice to get back to that level, not flown mine for a while, it's been way too windy outside.

I collected a lot of wreckage and used a lot of epoxy and carbon practising DS
Been a few years since I flew (60" as was and F3F)

So when are we going to see the first weaponised toy?

When I was a kid, there was a TV show about a gang of smugglers using RC aircraft - they were foiled by a bunch of pesky kids who fitted crossbows to their RC planes.

Matter of time till someone nasty decides that autonomous drone + explosives = really cheap guided bomb/missile. ๐Ÿ™

But then they could do that with an RC plane too.
