  • How long does it take you to walk a mile?

As my commuting bike is bust still & it looked glorious out this morning, I walked my route to work today.

A 5 mile hilly route & could not belive how slow I walk!

    I avg. 17min. miles!

I know my short stubby legs were never that quick at walking, I have enough people passing me when I walk to know that, but 17min!

4 mile an hour plus slow down a bit for hills – sounds okish.

I always reckon on 3 miles per hour on mixed terrain as being a good walking average so you are a bit faster than that. I feel I walk reasonably fast even though I too have short legs!

Average walking speed for people is around 3 mph. Fast walkers on good surfaces will manage 4 mph. On good surfaces you will also take an extra 20 mins for every 1000 ft climbed.

when I’ve been walking recently I cover six and half miles in about one hour and forty, so yep about 4mph.

4mph is a fairly quick pace, 3mph is a more typical pace for most people.

17 mins a mile is not that slow. 3 mph is 20 min miles

yep, I do walk faster than most people, I like getting a pace on. I used to run the same route in 45-50mins depending. I’ve actually clocked it as 6.8 on the bike but call it 6.5. Still having problems with the calf though so still not back running yet. It’s going to take longer than I first thought.

I am the slowest walker ever. I don’t “do” recreational walking, but when i have to i’d guess about 2.5-3 miles an hour. It drives people i’m walking with mental.

I reckon 4mph flat, 3ish when it gets a bit rougher.
Frighteningly I’ve seen people post 48 minute 5K race times, which would appear to be slightly slower than a brisk walk.

Who here has ever overtaken a “jogger” whilst walking? I have and it’s funny.

Was on the beeb the other day.. the speed you walk is an indication to your risk of developing dementia..

Those with a slower walking speed were found to be one and a half times more likely to develop dementia

    I now walk faster 🙂

According to My Tracks I did 3.3 miles in 48 mins the other day, on the flat at a fairly brisk pace. So that’s a touch over 4mph.

that is pretty funny sbz. I’ve run past plenty of people who are on bikes before though.

    Well not me

But that is quite funny 😉

Going to up my pace on the way home see if I can break the 16min avg carring my weekly shopping..

I’m currently training for the Nigmegen marches and we aim to do 15 minute miles but over the course of a 25 mile day its hard work.

17 minute miles isn’t too bad really if you’re not a regular mountain goat.

Once. I did up my walking pace a bit and felt a twinge of guilt doing it though 🙂

Once overtaken by a near dead looking fell runner. I got off and walked.

Have been overtaken by plenty of fell runners.

It’s a matter of honour to get them back, no matter what the cost.

Don’t make fun of those making an effort! It just puts them off.

Participation is good no matter how poor you are.

I’m not making fun, I’m saying it’s a frighting time. Which it is.

    Yeah is pretty mental!
I just looked at some of the records
50K in 3:34, which is about 6:53 a mile pace!

    Though cheating seems rife 😀

For short distances a 17min mile is fine. That would be a GOOD average over a 20 mile day though.

14mins 29s on today’s 5 and a bit mile walk. Was on pavement but between a town and village so very little foot traffic. Climbed all of 210feet so fairly flat.

    I love walking fastish.

I allow 20 minutes in calculations, e.g. 3mph. Am usually a little faster.

But ‘normal’ walking I would say 3mph is reasonably fast.

    Wikipedia says that’s 0.1mph below average 🙂

Blimey. I walk about 8 miles a day and track on endomondo. Just checked this week and my fastest mile was 11 minutes. I do however consider my walks as “training”….podcasts or music accompany me everywhere … I love walking !!!

Brisk walking is 4.3 mph, Strolling is 3 mph. I can walk a half marathon in three hours and would like to walk a marathon in under six. Having a fit dog helps 😆
