Currently considering one of the Sonder frontier frames on Alpkit to replace a kinesis ff29.
I run standard qr 29er wheels in this frame, can I use these in the boost qr 141mm frame? What would I need to be bale to do this, or would it require new wheels as well.

Sorry bit out of touch with these new fangled hubs and boost etc.

    thanks

135QR won’t work with 141QR and I don’t think there are any adaptors available to make it work. It seems like it would be a harder thing to adapt, too, so I wouldn’t expect any.

What is the hub? If it can be converted to 12mm you can get (usually warranty voiding) boost adaptors which might open up some other frames for you- but otherwise probably stick with 135 frames. Why are you swapping, I would have thought that would be a bit of a ‘downgrade’, what is it you’re looking for?

I’d be wary of the QR141 rear end. To my knowledge, only Marin have adopted that, so hubs are in sort supply. Maybe Hope have something in the works though?

    ‘Proper’ Boost is 148 bolt-through.

I thought the 12mm adaptors for hope hubs were the same regardless of boost or no, so it seems odd you can’t use the old qr ones on a boost hub to get 141

Just liked the option of the rack mounts, but I can get around that with current frame, thanks for the info I’ll scrap the frame change idea.

Hope QR adaptors take a 148mm boost 12mm axle hub and turn it into a 141mm QR hub.
Just like they turn a 142mm 12mm hub into a 135mm QR hub.

This applies to most manufacturers who use push in end caps and have boost and standard width versions of the same hub. So at a guess, DT, Hope, err.. i think thats it?

I assume a matching long QR is available from somewhere too?

Aye, that’s what I was saying, but the hope boost hubs[/url] don’t list it as an option, which is why I wondered- less of a ‘should it work’ and more of an ‘are you allowed/supposed to’ question. That may be just because no one cares about 141!

Ok, wasnt sure what you meant. On the same wavelength then.

    pretty much that.

Sadly, yes, as it sort of makes sense. If boost is a thing, and qr is sufficient for hardtails, then QRboost makes some sense. The reasoning Cy put up for cotic sticking with qr on the hardtails (lighter, cheaper, no stiffness loss) made me a little surprised they went 148×12 but I suppose you’ve also got to look at ease of getting kit

There isn’t really any mechanical need on a hardtail. Nice to have though. As Cotic themselves have now moved to.

Here’s the original post by Cy here – http://www.cotic.co.uk/news/2015/thruaxlehardtail

Very well reasoned from someone who actually is an engineer.

I must say I was a bit confused by this review – http://singletrackworld.com/reviews/review-ns-eccentric-cromo/

“Up until recently bolt through axles for hardtails were frowned upon as it was thought they stiffen up the rear end too much and take away some of the compliance. “

That just sounds like made up nonsense.

Clearly a lot has happened since I left the bike trade.
