We’re harvested like a cash crop over here and our economy’s up the sh*tter. The Greeks, apparently, don’t pay tax and they’re up the sh*tter too.

So the moral is – it doesn’t matter how much people obey their state’s system. Sooner or later we’ll all be up sharing the same sh*tter.

vat is 5.5% – not much good if you’ve little or no income

goverment jobs for life…..err no thats one of the reasons their on strike

retirement age is to be raised to as high as 65 – not much good if you’ve no job to retire from

income tax threshold is 12000 quid – er…….again not much good if you’ve no job

I think the moral is that if your country is run by a government that just wants to win votes at each election, they will do what the public want, which is not likely to be what the country needs.

Their and our governments have allowed a debt fuelled boom to turn to bust. None of us moaned about the credit, civil service pensions, schools, hospitals etc when debt looked like it was going to be paid off by growth. In turn fuelled by more consumer spending.

It didnt add up then and it wont add up now. So sadly the same governements are using the same tools that caused the problem to try to fix the problem.

It wont work, tax payers for decades will pay for the mess. Greece will go bust and take its lenders with it in the end.

Why do people make stuff up ? The EU rules don’t allow for a member state to charge 5.5% standard VAT rate. The Greeks have a higher VAT rate than we do, and yes, some of our goods are zero VAT rated. The personal tax allowance is not “12000 quid”, it’s £10k, and for anyone earning more than £14k their income tax is substantially higher than ours. As far as retirement is concerned the Greeks on average retire later than the EU average – although slightly before us. They work more hours than us though.

All that stuff is very easy to check out – if you can be bothered. And if you’re starting a thread on the subject perhaps you should be bothered.

EDIT : “jobs are guaranteed for life” …..the Greeks have double the unemployment rate we have in the UK.
