I am compelled to watch this for some reason, maybe hoping it'll get better but I just keep seeing a complete mess. Tonally it's all over the place, veering from hard edged gritty detective to kitchy Joel Schumacher cheese.

I'm surprised they didn't capitolise on the groundwork that nolan had laid for them with the dark night trilogy.

The series was never ever meant to be like the films.

I'll agree it's taking a few missteps, but it's early on in the season, and these things sometimes find a season to find their feet.

Needs some Batman.

Yeah, I watch it, its ok. Can't help wondering why an English actor plays Gordon. Shortage of American actors?
The guy who plays his partner was brilliant in Sons of Anarchy, good in this too.

An English actor doesn't play Gordon. Ben McKenzie is from Texas.

Also, it has Batman. He's just 14. It's an origins story.

It's not great but I'll keep watching. Oswald and Gordon make me think it might get better.

The Jim Gordon character is the main thing it has going for it. I find the Penguin just completely at odds with some of it, the Riddler too. Of all the Batman villains they had to foreshadow from seventy years of comics they had to go with the ones from the 60's tv show.

I mean tonight the main story concerned what was essentially a satanic/occult serial killer ritually murdering teenagers. Something that wouldn't have been out of place in True Detective, then you have Cobblepot hamming it up ...

it's watchable but hardly compelling.
I think Gordon is a great character but poorly acted.

there's something about that Fish lady that makes my loins lurch a bit...

There are creams you can get for lurch.

I find myself watching, and then about 20mins in every ep I have the same vague thoughts of "this could be so cool" and wondering why it really isn't.

all the baddies are so...blatant/ one dimensional

I quite like it, in the same way I watched Smallville.

all not great acting, plots that go all over the place, but essentially we all know where it'll end up eventually so it's nice to see someone else's approach to a jigsaw.

of course, if you're a comic snob then why the hell would you watch anyway? Unless of course you get off on disappointment.

Excellent! I'm going to enjoy it more now!
I'm confusing him up with someone else... who could it be..?

Jamie - Freeloader!

Yep (Jada Pinkett Smith) although her new trainee sidekick is pretty erm, nice (Makenzie Leigh?)

I like the way we are starting to see the characters come to light, the Penguin most obvious, but then CatWoman, and The Joker all starting to appear. Like a crime drama with a comic edge.

These kind of things always take a while to form up - at the beginning they can seem pretty bobbins.

I quite like it at the moment....about 3 episodes being though, so might catch up on a couple this evening...

Oh, he's the bloke from Southland!! Dunno what made me think he was English. I'm a din. (Maybe it was James McAvoy I was mixing him up with. Yeah: Din.)

That butler bloke's English! What, is there a shortage of American butler actors?

Chris O'Donnell? - er, he's American?

I think it's alright, it's got potential for the second series, once they decide what their market is.

Gordon's wife is welsh on the non us parts conversation, why is her jaw so wide?

As TV, it's popcorn, easy to consume nothingness. As comic book related content, it's pretty poor. Acting is pretty awful, scene's at least look nice and comic book style. I don't hate it, or love it but I still seem to be watching it.

why is her jaw so wide?

Wouldn't fit on her face otherwise, would it?

That's 9 hours of my massively important life...
You'd soon get bored of me after 9 hours..we should be less forgiving with the ol' goggle box...

Damn right, I gave up after three. Arrow and The Flash are far better.

Lol Flash is terrible but I sill watch it.

Gotham is trying for Dark but can't set the tone properly. I quite like it though, sucker for anything Batman

The best way to view Gotham is through the optics of it being a cop show set against the Batman mythology. As opposed to thinking it’s an out and out Batman story and making comparisons with the various franchises.

Sure it has its weaknesses but they’re outweighed by its strengths – not being self-aware, noir’ish moody exploration of Gotham, snappy stories, Alfred having something about him and not being this tight-lipped old codger and Robin Lord as Cobblepot has been excellent (his is a really good origins arc) – to name a few.

I think it's great and will go on to have a loyal following.

CountZero - you're normally there or thereabouts for opinions on fantasy & sci-fi literature / TV films ... but Arrow, seriously? That really is abysmally naff 😀

Jamie,

I bought the first Arrow episode, watched it then emailed the blinkbox administrators immediately to delete it from my account as it was sullying my collection!

Ok. After watching EP10, the midseason finale no less. I give in. It's poop.

They should just kill Gotham, and have a spin off with Bullock and Alfred.

...I'll still watch the whole season, tho 😡
