I made this helmet mount a while back but havent had a chance to use it. Wanted to go somewhere without trees so I didnt break my neck if it cliped a branch. The light was perfect this morning but the trail was still a bit slippy and rutted. Needless to say I took it easy with that strapped to my head.

Just a different angle than the normal videos.

Here is a few photos of how I made the mount for any of you thats interested:

nice! been keen to try something like that since seeing a GoPro promo vid – that one had camera very close rider’s (Ryan Nyquist) face.

would be interested to see how you made it – your last link isn’t working for me.

    GoPro Mount Pics

Cheers try the one above or below. I used a 1.5kg dumbell thats out of shot on the back as a counter weight. It was heavy but it seemed to keep everything still with no vibration. I wouldnt want to come off with that on the head but will be trying it again when I can push a bit on the trail.

btw that was an old pump bracket. It was also a bit better secured than in the pics that was just a trial.

righty. off to rummage in the shed…

have you tried it without the counter weight?

No but I reckon it will bounce too much unless its a smooth trail. They arent heavy but the further out the pole the more of balance it makes it. There are loads of alternative mounts people have made from things around the house. Just gotta use what you have and be creative. Make sure post the result if you make one.

    Awesome! I love that angle!

I’ve mucked about with something similar vid This is my mate riding some jumps. We made the boom quite long, so you could only really use it on open trails. I really like seeing the rider from the front though. I’ve also had good results from wearing the camera on your back facing behind. vid.

The angle looks fantastic but you’ve got some serious leverage on your head and neck if you have a crash!! 1 kg dumbell and about a metre of lever. I pity your neck if you’re unlucky enough to crash.
Wouldn’t it be better to extend it off the front of the bike rather than your head?
My experiences with GoPros are that crashes are not unlucky, they are almost a certainty! I’ve got the footage to prove it.

Adstick class vids. Any pics of your mates mount. Looks solid. Mine was on my full face and there was movement. That pisspot didn’t seem to move much. Class riding too.

    Now I want a GoPro for Christmas…

I’m almost certain that whatever I produced would be rubbish though…

Great mount, angle looks good. First time I saw this angle was Sam Hill at Fort Bill – awesome video

Crash footage at 1:18 is crazy.

Not a mission of me wearing that on Fortwilliam. It was fvcking bad enough trying to think about lines let alone think about breaking my neck.

    Class cheers for sharing that.

Cheers Druid I noticed that myself as well.

session88 – It’s an old golf club shaft with a counterweight on the back of the helmet. Here’s a video of him riding with it Stickcam. Please excuse the donkey impressions! TBH it’s a bit unwieldy. Maybe we should shorten it.

adstick – Funny that is what I had intended to use as my boom originally and thought it would be too heavy. What size of a weight has he on the back? I had a 1.5kg Dumbell Felt ok but would like to lighten it all.

Na dont shorten it I think it looks class. I mean the footage. I got some weird looks when I was heading up to the trail this morning.

Do you think you could reduce the counterbalance weight by having it also on a stick? Probably not quite as long a stick, that’d end up like an episode of the chuckle brothers.

Anyone built a backpack style mount for a kind of on board follow cam angle? I think that would be cool.

see my first post! Chest cam worn backwards. works really well, if the following rider stays close.

Here`s a gyro version on this film, tilting your head makes it spin 🙂

And a film by the other rider shows the gyro cam working…

    Hey adstick,

Rear follow cam is cool but I wasn’t that clear, didn’t mean camera facing backwards. I was planning something like a cranked boom on a backpack putting the camera up and behind the rider but facing forwards. Almost like the perspective of a chesty cam but showing most of the rider instead of just arms/bars/knees.

Maybe a periscope mount is a better name for it.

I’ve seen one somewhere of a guy skiing waist deep powder and this mount gave an awesome angle and some epic footage.

Ah, here we go – something like this might be cool on a bike

how is it riding with the counterweight?

i’d quite like to see a side angle one – maybe with a drop

you’d see a stick coming out the top of you’re head and would have to be careful with the width of the trail you picked.. but could be quite cool! a gopro is probably wide angle enough that it wouldn’t have to be that far away..

With the gopro’s you get a special helmet mount which is designed to be so that the camera faces your face, yet it sits at the top lip of the helmet. As Jeff above said, it’s a wide enough angle such that it doesn’t have to be far away to capture your face.

however, from that great distance (first video), it looks great!

I set this up with a Contour HD. Added a counter weight, (bag of rice).

liking that gyro cam a lot…

anyone got tips for a mini-zip line for a wee camera? few shots in one of the videos that coastkid posted done with one.

Zip line is my next project. Heavy fishing line and pullies from a fishing rod. Will post pics later of the type of thing.

    Burts – that’s the one!

I’ve just picked up a GoPro and reckon that angle would be cool for skiing.

I have a plan involving 32mm push fit plumbing pipe and gaffer tape. An inverted ‘T’ can sit stable in the bottom of a pack, with the shaft coming up to shoulder blades and securing in the mouth of the pack (my ski pack has a shovel pocket and handle strap)

Add a 45 degree to the top and extend the boom up and back at 45 degrees from the shoulder blades up behind your head – then use a handlebar mount to fit the GoPro, pointing forward. Gaffer tape to stop the joints twisting – but then it’s easily demountable at the end of a run. Could work!

You might consider this mounting system from VuVantage.
