Following the enjoyable ride round the beautiful highlights of Rossendale on last weekend's Northern Chapter ride, a few people asked when I'd be running another Marple ride. We settled on Sunday Dec 18th as the best date for those who had expressed interest.

As usual, you can spout all you want about dates and routes, but the date is fixed and I'll be deciding the route, so save your breath 😉

If you want to deck your bike (or yourself) out in tinsel or other such decorations, please do feel free. I might even mail Chipps a personal invite and see if we are graced with an official STW presence - you never know, we might even make it into the magazine, so your decorative skills could be famous nation- and even world-wide!

So, details:

9.30 for 10

Meeting point will (as usual) be Roman Lakes in Marple
http://www.romanlakes.co.uk/
Nearest Post Code SK6 7HB
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=396955&Y=387855&A=Y&Z=120

The best way is to come down Lakes Road from the middle of Marple.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=53.396381,-2.075644&daddr=Lakes+Rd+to:Unknown+road&hl=en&geocode=%3BFdC0LgMd86vg_w%3BFVGhLgMdtr3g_w&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=0&sz=15&via=1&sll=53.395792,-2.065129&sspn=0.017401,0.038581&ie=UTF8&ll=53.395281,-2.059636&spn=0.017401,0.038581&t=h&z=15

Google maps seems to be fixated on sending people down Linnet Clough. Technically it's a road and your Sat Nav may direct you that way too, but it's not really too suitable for your average car. You'll find this out as it'll probably be the last descent

Following feedback from people who struggled to find the meeting point on previous rides, this is the streetview you're looking for

http://lyxus.net/gyja

Note the green fingerpost sign pointing to roman lakes. The postcode for that sign is SK6 7DF. At least one person has said that he'll be parking up at the top of the hill near that sign and riding down to the Lakes, as the road is in pretty poor shape to be frank. I'll be riding down so I don't mind 😀

I might even bring the tandem out. Will see how things go

Really enjoyed my jaunt out around there on Saturday. I've not ridden round there for a while. I'll definitely be in for a bit more of that

Lot of people in the area! I hadn't realised. I was at Roman Lakes a few weeks back and got attacked by a goose which then chewed on my tyre while holding my bike hostage for 20 mins.

Sadly I will be working that weekend as it's going to be a busy one for retail.

Steve - Marple from your place will be a tad easier than Delamere, although you might need lights! Stu will be on the tandem if all goes to plan, don't forget:)

Stu - will deffo join you for beers, The Fox Inn is probably the most suitable as you can walk there from the B&B.

Definitely pootle pace, and not as "full on" as the riding round the trail centres - at least until we hit some of the descents

It's been pointed out that I didn't specify a start time in the original post. 😳

Let's make it 9.30 for 10.

There's a café at roman lakes and they do coffee, hot chocolate and bacon butties if you need some fortification before setting off

right, let's see if I can find a friendly moderator to add the start time to the original post..

Well, we went out today on the tandem to give the planned ride a spin and see how it goes

Hmmm. bit of a cold wet day, to be suer, but certain parts were more like rivers than trails. to be frank we got so cold and wet the phrase "game of soldiers" was used and we headed home at a suitable juncture

As a result, we've learned two things

1) the planned route may well need to change depending on the weather. This is ok, I know the local are well enough to string together routes at will, and I will be keeping an eye on the weather

2) we won't be riding the tandem. Riding solos will allow us to ride at the right pace, and be able to handle the bikes to suit the trail conditions. And it means mrs nbt gets to ride her lovely flux

it's not the tandem that's the problem, it's the riders. We've tandem ridden all the indiviual bits of the ride before, but Mrs NBT's not keen (ok I'm not keen) on trying to lead a(nother) ride in cold wet weather on a tandem. iNo. iRCrap. iCanLiveWithIt.

Don't quote me on this but should be back around 2pm if all goes well, might stretch a bit later. There are a few points where I can change the route depending on weather, trail conditions and riders, but equally there are some bits that once we start, we're committed to. You know you're welcome to just drop us a line if you fancy a ride, Russ.

No, I'm not a fan of stopping at cafés mid ridfe, I never get back into the groove afterwards. There'll be plenty of time to grab cakes and powerbars from your bag when we stop to regroup
