Currently on Day2 of 7 of a course of 500mg clarithromycin

Causing me a stinking headache

Doing the Fred Whiiton on Sunday, just read it's not good with heart stuff. Previously had an ectopic rhythm.

Expect HR will he hitting 190 on Sunday in parts (my formula Max is 182)

Thinking I should not take tomorrow's and return to quacks office.

I know Doc will say "rest" but that won't happen,

You want someone on a bike forum to go against your GPs advice so that you can ride your bike?

GP didn't have all the facts as I didn't tell them about Fred Whitton.

Really don't want to miss it.

Tiger - can I just say that you are indeed an idiot if 1. You stop the antis and 2. You want to ride your bike with a chest infection.

Man up and accept that you are not doing the ride at the weekend. Your health is more important than a bike ride. Is it really worth scaring your lungs, and risking your long term health??

Go back to your GP with the facts.

There'll be more Fred Whittons.

and...

GP didn't have all the facts as I didn't tell them about Fred Whitton.

Seriously?

It's just a bike ride. Do a different one, do it next year.
Oh, and tell your doctor ALL the facts.

*Edit - If Drac and I agree on something it just HAS to be right. 😉

Oh and unfortunately as some one who has had Pneumonia twice in 5 years, take my advice, do not rush back to exercise. Take it slowly. Do too much too soon and you will slow your recovery.

First Pneumonia I had took me about 1 year to get over and then was more susceptible to colds etc. 2nd one was Christmas this year, and only just back doing exercise and have to be very careful in the cold

I do stuff against doctor's advice all the time, it generally works out (I'd not ride a mountain bike at all if I listened to my consultant, he'd like me to do gentle road rides) But for some things it's a terrible idea, especially when it's short-term.

But why even go to a doctor and not give them full details, then disregard their advice? It's like an episode of House. At the very least, give them full details, ask them for an informed medical opinion on what you're considering, then if you want disregard their advice- at least then you know what you're doing. (sounds sarcastic, actually serious). You've basically doubly distanced yourself from good advice.

I didn't delinerately withhold the info as ever it was a whirlwind Doctors appointment.

Sit down, what's wrong with you ? Lift your shirt breathe / repeat / say "99"

Take this form to Radiology now at local Hosp. / take these for 10 days

Bye...

There was no "you need to rest, avoid work, etc"

saying "99" (scooby-doo is better, in all ways !) is a way of checking whether your chest sounds like pneumonia (it sounds different down a stethoscope if you have kack in your lung). If GP did that, then sent you for a x-ray they obvz suspect that's what you may have.

Don't **** about. Take your tabs, rest and get better. At least wait for the x-ray to be reported and talk to yr GP again before exercising.
If the headache is bad, yes it could be the drug (may not, of course - some chest infections are well known for including headache quite commonly) and you could ask for a different antibiotic.

Are you on any other drugs for your heart or anything else ?

Seriously, Darwin Award..........
There's easier ways to commit slow suicide (apologies to any one with mental health issues), but I can't believe a grown adult has even asked the question. 😈

It is held in memory of Fred Whitton, racing secretary of the Lakes Road Club, who died of cancer at the age of 50 in 1998.

Chest infection requiring antibiotics and a chest xray and you are going to go and do a massive ride....... You are a bit dumb really aren't you.
By all means go do the ride, but you will probably not make it round, and then have to have many weeks from doing nothing.
Worst case...... hospital and serious issues.

Your call fella

FFS stoner, it's not Fred Whitton who's unwell, it's his GP - name's Darwin Something, I think

OP - helps that you're on no other drugs, as clari doesn't mix well with some stuff

Smoke cigarettes for a chest infection?

Is that wise?

Yes, thanks Tiger

Can anybody suggest a nice coffee shop in Edinburgh with secure bike parking outside so we can get to know each other a little better?

The Fred Whitton will completely knock out your immune system, so you could easily get the chest infection coming back only this time resistant to clarithromycin and the whole class of antibiotics.

Personally I'd say it would be pretty stupid to go ahead with the ride.

Go back to your GP... It's a well known fact we carry a magic wand in our desk for when people have an important event/holiday coming up.. It cures all 'by the weekend' donchaknow...

I've just finished two courses of antibiotics (first lot didn't work 😯 ) Clarithromycin are minging, I couldn't fall asleep & had a metallic taste in my mouth all week too. No idea how you can even contemplate the Fred whilst on them, I'm exhausted & I don't have a chest infection!

There's other sportives, health comes first especially in your case.

Odly I think they taste really nice when you take them, almost to the point I could eat them as sweets, but I do agree after a while the taste in your mouth is horrible.

Apparently Clarithromycin is the Daddy of antis for Pneumonia though, unless you want to go full on and have IV's

Tiger, you are Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes, and ICMFP.

Good luck sir. Fellow laughers in the face of sensible medical advice salute you. (Those of us still around, anyway)

Fair play. I heard someone hacking some lung up at about 5.30am getting ready at the start and wondered if it was you.

Didn't get going while 7am so must by have been some other idiot.

8:55 was the time.

Not dead but not done myself any favours / should have listened and not done it as it was hard work. Couldn't get a full breath of air so pushed up parts of Hardknott and Wrynose.

Heart rate was doing weird stuff, never dropped below 155 even on the downhill free wheels but also didn't dare push it past 180 on uphills. It just seemed to stay at 165-175 no matter what I did. So I tired and ran out of fuel very quickly.

Couldn't hold pace so kept getting dropped by any group I latched onto. Cold Fell was a lonely low and by this point realised WTF was I doing it was too late so had to finish.

So in short / should have listened / shouldn't have done it / didn't enjoy it / won't do it again.

But it's done.
